How long does it take to become a curator?
What training is required?
Can you become a curator without a degree? How do you apply for a curator's position?
The first thing I need to say is that the term curator is the most misunderstood term in museum theory. Not only does it cover a wide variety of jobs, from exhibition director to museum education director, but it also covers a wide variety of jobs. There are different levels of curation, and there are multiple types of curators. I want to talk about all of these different types, but my focus will be on the traditional type of curator. I have chosen not to call them museum directors, because I think directors should have a specific function within an institution; in most cases, that function is program or exhibitions. I'm talking about curators, so we're going to talk about some of the more traditional forms of curating.
What Does A Curator Do? I'm not just talking about general collections curation, like a general education department, where curators don't really do anything; I'm talking about general exhibition curation, where curators do everything: they design content, they create displays, they create exhibitions, they help programs, they interact with staff and visitors, and they coordinate the entire exhibition. Even though a curator might have a specific role on an exhibition, such as an artist in residence, curator might have very little interaction with that artist. Some curators, when they are working on their own exhibitions, create them specifically for the museum; then, when they are about to display those exhibitions, they are the ones to actually present them. They may even be the one to write the press release, organize publicity, and give interviews. In any case, they are the ones who are responsible for making the exhibition happen. In addition to that, a curator may be required to be a part of the board of directors, the programming committee, or the marketing committee of the institution.
It should be said, however, that some museums have no curators at all. For example, a modern art museum may have a curator who oversees all of the objects in the museum, who curates objects according to their historical period, and who creates exhibitions using objects that relate to that period. However, this curator may not be the one who leads the entire exhibition.

We calculate this for you here. While curators are earning a lot less than doctors, dentists, architects, lawyers, chefs and the likes, they are on par with many other professionals who make less.
How much does a curator earn? To find out how much you can expect to earn as a curator you need to do some math. The first thing you need to do is find the median salary. The median is the number you need to look at when you are calculating how much money you could make, and it will depend on the amount of experience you have, the industry you work in and the type of curation you are doing. When you enter the median salary into a calculator you will be able to determine how much you could make by taking your current income and then subtracting the median pay from your current salary.
How much do moma curators make?
You need to apply for a job at the museum to find out.
Most institutions that display art and artifacts rely on curators who are paid very little or even nothing to maintain their collections. They work under stressful conditions, and many have to juggle multiple projects. Still, it is a career most people would not take lightly.
The Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC has around 15 million visitors a year, making it one of the top tourist attractions in the US. It is so popular, that there is only space for 1,500 people per tour. (The salary is set on a yearly basis and may be slightly higher or lower each year.
A museum curator usually has a college degree and will likely spend years working in the industry before becoming more formally qualified. Once they pass the test and get hired, they will typically be required to have two or three years of experience before they are awarded a raise and a promotion. The pay depends on where the museum is located. Museums tend to get more visitors in larger cities with high real estate costs. Museums in rural areas or with small populations can pay much less. Museums do not want to advertise how low their wages are. It seems insulting to potential applicants and there is the fear that museums with bad reputations for low pay will be seen as inferior in comparison. So, if the museum advertises a range, the salary is probably going to be lower than that. It doesn't even need to be low, it can be just low.
If you find yourself in a position where you want to work in a museum, you are in luck. There are plenty of low paying positions available and the ones that do pay well are well worth the sacrifice. If you are determined to make a career change, a museum is a great option. You will be spending long hours at the museum.
