How do I watch Prime Video on-demand?

Does Amazon have video on demand?

Jeff Bezos has been talking a lot lately about the future of retail and entertainment.

He often refers to a future where we don't own anything. I think he's got a point. A future where we don't own any books, movies or music. And why not? With streaming, I don't have to buy it.

When we talk about Amazon Prime Video on Demand (POD), I think we're only talking about Amazon Studios' POD. That's not a bad thing. I'd rather Amazon make Amazon Studios' content than someone else, because Amazon is a company that makes stuff people really want.

But Amazon Studios isn't just Amazon Studios. It's not even just Amazon. It's an organization of people. It's a group of creators, engineers, curators and producers. It's a company. That's what I love about Amazon. It's so full of people, all doing amazing stuff.

I'm part of that organization too. My name is Matt Billeck. I'm an engineer at Amazon Studios. I work with the team that makes Amazon Prime Video on Demand.

So far, we've released hundreds of hours of great movies and shows. We have dozens of shows in production, with many more to come. I'm looking forward to what we'll do next.

But I'm also a creator myself. I make movies. For most of my career, I've done that through my company, the award-winning indie film company, FilmBuff. But I also make movies on Amazon, just like Jeff.

A few years ago, I had a breakthrough in my career. A friend told me about this new thing called Amazon Video on Demand. It was a way for us to make movies and TV shows and put them out there for everyone to watch.

I started looking into it, because I wanted to take my passion for filmmaking and combine it with the power of Amazon. The idea that we could make great movies and shows and put them online for anyone to watch, was so exciting.

Here's the thing. There were already websites that put movies online. They were called streaming services.

Does Amazon Prime have on-demand movies?

I thought those were restricted to Netflix.

This is the "Amazon Original" video content. Unlike traditional Amazon content, which is what you'd expect Amazon Video is about, it is only available on Amazon Video and Hulu, so it doesn't work in Netflix, etc. Even if someone who has Prime can put it on a computer at work and view it, it would still be unavailable if the Prime member hasn't got access to a Amazon (Fire) TV or isn't near one.

Now that we have both the new Fire and Prime - would you all recommend going with the first or the second? And if so, what are the advantages of each? I personally will be trying out the 3rd one because although I know the others were released late last year, the only reason I went with the second is that my new Fire has a larger battery life than the original and I like having a larger screen. Both Fire 1 & 2 has wifi, which is nice. Not many other things to go on from personal experience, which I hope to be wrong for you.

If I had to make a direct comparison I'd probably buy an iPad Mini or Nexus 5x, but then that's pretty subjective. On Amazon, there were some movies listed as showing up on Prime. I haven't downloaded any of them yet. There were four:

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1: Alina Smith: Girl on a bike. I, Tonya: Suffragette: Fahrenheit 11/9. Are those movie rentals like on Netflix? If not, they've added a bunch of new videos. But for most people, I don't think you can buy/rent them using Amazon. You have to use another online service for that.

I was actually surprised that Amazon made their own movies and made them available as rentals. They are really getting into the content game. The best part is it could open up Amazon Prime to other online services. If you use iTunes, Google Play Music, Xbox, or any other online service I'm sure they will work great, which means Amazon Prime would get wider adoption and users wouldn't have to log into multiple sites.

Amazon is now a video-centric network, even though it has no plans to actually add TV channels yet.
