Why is my Pia VPN not logging in on my phone?
As I mentioned in a previous article, Pia VPN is a good VPN app for those who want the ability to use different VPN locations without having to reconnect.
But if you want to stay connected, when you leave your wifi network, why not automatically connect? I can remember many times in the past when I would use a VPN app, but leave it running and it would never reconnect once I left my wifi.e. If you look at their FAQ's you can see they are more than aware of this problem:
If your internet connection does not work when you log off, or no longer works when you log on, try turning off your VPN before logging out. To turn off your VPN. Go to Settings and select the "VPN" option. Tap the toggle switch next to "On/Off". Log into their site here: Download their newest version and open it. Go to VPN > On/Off. You'll then need to restart your wifi and/or data network to get them connected. Note, you'll have to delete any existing Pia VPN apps from your phone or any other VPN connected apps such as Tor, OpenVPN, etc, before you download the new version.
Hopefully, you'll have a working Pia VPN app again asap. UPDATE! Pia VPN have fixed the issue just now. In the meantime you might have to delete the app completely and reinstall it as their solution doesn't work.

Why is VPN not connected on iPhone?
I have just updated my iPhone with iOS 11.
3 and I am having difficulty connecting to a VPN. I can't even bring up the VPN connection on the phone. When I attempt to establish the VPN connection, the "Establishing VPN connection" message appears and then disappears immediately.
Why might this be happening? What should I do about it? My provider supports IPSec. This discussion is related to my iOS 11.3 update which I experienced this problem when I connected to an IPSec VPN. I uninstalled the VPN app, reset it, reinstalled and was able to connect using IPsec. After that, I connected to several other IPSec VPNs with the same problem of disconnection shortly after attempting to set the VPN connection.
Your VPN provider might be working fine. You were just unlucky enough to get a new bug when upgrading your OS. It sounds like you were unable to set up a VPN before because the IPSec tunnel was broken.
You will be required to add the VPN connection again (ie, the app) which should prompt your phone to re-establish a link. This time, instead of the VPN being broken and dropped (as in the past), it will succeed establishing a VPN connection.
If the problem persists, you could try uninstalling the VPN app and reinstalling it. There are several other possible reasons for this too which you might be able to diagnose yourself and report back.

I have just been using Pia VPN with my iPhone but it's been behaving very strangely lately.

Re: ? The iPhone and iPad will use the device's cellular data connections to get content through a tunnel and that connection may need to be switched on and connected to your cellular plan provider. You will need to contact the cellular provider of your account to check that your network connection can be switched on by them. For more details please refer to Apple's support. It's possible that the cellular data connection of your iPhone or iPad was not enabled for the app when it was loaded and needs to be enabled.
This is why we recommend that you use a VPN client app instead of a browser extension app because the browser app will usually not open a mobile data connection even when it is enabled, whereas the VPN client will work with any data connection. Therefore, in most cases the VPN app will work even if your device is out of mobile data coverage.

The VPN app will never open a mobile data connection for you, as explained in our response to your previous question. In addition, your phone must be connected to a carrier plan that offers mobile data coverage for data roaming. If that is not possible or you are not in a data roaming zone, you won't be able to connect.
