What is a proxy server and how to setup in Linux?

A proxy server is a type of software server that allows user's to surf the web without them having to go through your system. It works by making it seem as if they are located where you want them to be. If you are at work, they might want to be at school, if you are at home, you want them to be on vacation. And the best thing about proxy servers is that you can choose which ones to use and who gets which proxy. So let's say you're at work, and your work proxy server sends all the traffic that goes through their network and sends it through your company and then to the internet. On the other hand, you're home and you don't have a proxy server in front of your computer. When you visit websites, there is a high chance that the data sent over the internet goes through your office and then it hits the internet.

It is important to set a proxy server for your computer to make sure that you get the correct IP address when using the internet. Also, this gives you the option of being able to change your IP address without letting the sites know. A lot of people prefer this method of proxy settings because you can use different IP addresses without anyone else knowing. Proxy setting is important because if you work for example at Microsoft and the whole office uses a proxy server, then if you go on Youtube, it will take you to the office's YouTube and not to the proper one. So for this article, we will be looking at setting a proxy server in Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Debian.

Why you need a proxy server? So why would you want a proxy server? Well, you can use proxies to change your IP address so that other sites won't know you are behind a proxy. Also, if you want to visit banned sites or anything else, you can do this without getting caught. It's like having an entire other identity on the internet without people being able to tell. There are many reasons why you would want a proxy server and I'm going to tell you why in this article.

What is the command line for proxy settings?

I am confused about where to find the proxy settings.

I have been looking around and found that you can set the proxy settings through the command line, but I am confused about which is right for me.

When you look at the command line you see this: curl -s. And I think it has my proxy settings somewhere in there. How would I know what they are if I was looking at the command line? If not used, the LDAPOPTURL parameter will be used instead. Note that the above examples are using the latest libcurl 7.19.7 release.

In libcurl 6.x, no proxy options are available (instead, if --libcurl-extra-options is passed, then libcurl will try to open a URL with the passed parameters when it comes to FTP).
