Can you use a VPN with a Synology NAS?
If your Synology NAS has an internet connection, then it's time to consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for privacy and security. VPNs are software and hardware devices that let you connect to a remote network securely.
The main idea behind a VPN is to give you access to your company's network when you're not at work. This helps you to access your files, use online services, and connect to the internet safely.
Synology NAS users can take advantage of a VPN for many reasons, including: You want to keep your Synology NAS private from other users on the network. You want to access your company's network without being connected to it. You need to access certain websites without being tracked by the government. You need to connect to your Synology NAS remotely, and you don't have a computer or mobile device with which to connect. You don't want your employees to see your IP address or your device's MAC address. If you need to connect to your Synology NAS remotely, you may need to use a VPN. A VPN on a Synology NAS works in a similar way as a VPN on any other computer. You download a VPN client on your Synology NAS, then you select the server you want to connect to, and enter the details of your account.
A VPN will hide your real IP address from anyone who attempts to access your Synology NAS. It will also encrypt all your network traffic, making sure no one can see what you're doing online.
The most popular VPN apps for Synology NAS include TunnelBear, HideMyAss, OpenVPN, and VyprVPN. They all work in the same way and give you similar benefits.
If you want to use a VPN to access your company's network when you're not at work, you'll need to have a computer or mobile device with a VPN client. These can be found on the App Store or Google Play.
You can use a VPN for other purposes. For example, you might want to use a VPN when you need to access your company's network remotely. You could also use a VPN when you want to connect to your Synology NAS without being connected to your company's network.

Is Synology VPN free?
Synology VPN is a free to use internet VPN service from the same developers as ZoneMinder, which was the free to use backup application.
They do not charge for the service and have even made their own VPN client available.
The free version of Synology VPN offers 1TB traffic per month and 2GB traffic for free on all servers. This compares to the free tier of ZoneMinder which is 500MB traffic per month on all servers and 150GB traffic for free on the ZoneCloud servers.
What ? Synology VPN free is a way of using a free VPN to connect to the Internet from your Synology NAS or router. This is an ideal way to save money, because for a small monthly fee you get unlimited bandwidth. But for most people this isn't going to be enough data - and you will need a fast broadband connection to the Internet to be able to benefit from such a service.
For those that don't have a fast home internet connection then Synology VPN free might not be for you. There is also a monthly paid version of the product available, if you want a more reliable internet connection.
Is Synology VPN free a good choice? If you are wanting to access a website that only has content for paying subscribers then using a free VPN isn't for you. For these people the free product from Synology is better than nothing, but if you are looking to pay for the service then the paid option with extra bandwidth is a better option.
So in summary, you would better off with the paid version of Synology VPN than the free version of the product, as you won't miss out on any features. The Synology VPN free service is a great way to save money though if you aren't happy with your current broadband provider.
This is a free to use internet VPN provided by the developers of ZoneMinder - who developed the free version of ZoneMinder used in Synology. So Synology VPN free is only free as long as you are happy with the free software on your Synology device. If you aren't happy with ZoneMinder then you might want to try other free products from the developers.
Synology is a NAS vendor who also offer a set-top-box known as the DS412+
