Is the WCNA certification worth it?
I recently attended the 2025 Certified Network Administrator (WCNA) certification seminar and the experience has changed my approach to networking and systems administration. I am an advocate for professional certifications. The advantage of a formal certificate is that the applicant has gone through an examination process in the presence of expert reviewers and has proved themselves to be technically competent. A good certification is a good piece of evidence that the applicant has passed the necessary threshold.
However, I've always thought that the WCNA was too broad and that the exam was more of a cookie cutter of questions rather than a real test of technical skill. I'd often look at people in tech support and see them certified, but not necessarily skilled enough to be a good network technician.
I admit that part of my skepticism had to do with the fact that the WCNA is run by Microsoft the big evil empire. In particular, I have had bad experiences with the technical support offered by many Microsoft products. The idea of paying hundreds of dollars to Microsoft for a certification that in all likelihood will help me get hired for little or no added compensation never held much appeal.
That being said, I decided to take the plunge. The exam was held at the Marriott Seattle Center in downtown Seattle, WA on April 19, 2025. It was one of three simultaneous examinations held that day. The exam itself was about 3 hours long, which was a surprise to me because the syllabus was only 3.5 hours long and my books had barely been read.
The exam consisted of two parts. The first part was a 1-hour timed test and was based on Windows XP. You could choose a maximum of 100 questions from topics such as File Sharing, System Security, TCP/IP, IP Addresses, IP Networking, User Accounts and Passwords, Advanced Computer Services, Windows Operating System, Internet Information Services, Network Connections, Firewall, Domain Controller, and Network Security. You were awarded 1 point for each correct answer, but only after you had already earned 75 points. The first 50 points were given out for answering the questions quickly and efficiently. Then, for the remaining 25 points, the examiner allowed you to continue answering once you stopped writing down your answers.
Can you get certified on Wireshark?
Here's a great example of how you can quickly use Wireshark to understand what's going on with your network.
(Note that it's from 2025, and some things have changed.) This post is part of a series called Get Certified, where I guide readers on the process of getting certified on Wireshark and other network analysis tools.
How to get certified: A step-by-step guide. The process to get certified is pretty straightforward. While it can seem a bit daunting at first, the good news is that you're already familiar with most of the process. You just have to do a bit of prepping and a lot of learning, which is what this post is all about.
Here's a sample certificate I created for a Cisco Systems employee. Click the image to view it larger.
Step 1: Learn the basics of network analysis. The first step is to learn the basics of network analysis. You'll need to know how to: analyze a captured packet. Capture packets and inspect them. Decode the protocol headers. Understand the data type of the packet. Read raw Ethernet frames. Create VLANs. Set IP address and subnet masks. Capture flows with NetFlow v5. Capture and analyze 802.11 frames capture and analyze BGP flows. Decode the BGP message protocol. Create Cisco Packet Tracer graphs. Use this link to download a document that walks you through basic network analysis. The entire process is just over 100 pages long.
Step 2: Prepare your network for analysis. Once you've read through the document, you'll want to run through a few sample packets and try to figure out what's happening in your network. If you get stuck, don't worry: Wireshark is your friend.
You can capture packets with Wireshark in two ways: Use the -c flag to capture a single packet. Select the capture options on the Capture menu.
Or, select the packet in the Packet Details pane, and then select Capture on the right-click menu.
