How long does it take to recover from zinc deficiency?

What does zinc deficiency look like in your fingernails?

Your hair and teeth?

Your nails, hair and bones have the highest concentration of zinc, therefore your signs of zinc deficiency are best displayed through these body parts.

The Nail. Zinc is vital to the normal development of healthy nail. Without sufficient zinc the nail plate will not mature properly, the nail grows in a thick wedge shape and becomes very brittle.

Nails may also become yellow, grey, brittle, and split. In extreme cases the nails fall off altogether! This condition is called onychoschisis. All of the nails in one foot can fall off because there has been severe zinc deficiency.

The hair. When you have a zinc deficiency your hair may also be affected. Brittle, greasy hair is a good indicator. Hair may even be falling out. This is an early sign of zinc deficiency. People with zinc deficiency are at greater risk of premature ageing of the skin, and wrinkling of the hands.

The bones. An important function of bone is that it helps to prevent the loss of vital minerals from the body when the diet is deficient. With a zinc deficiency the bones will often become thinner, and more fragile. People with zinc deficiency have weak tooth enamel, and reduced eyesight (cataracts).

The teeth. Zinc is present in very high concentration in the outer covering of the tooth, called the dental enamel. If your diet is deficient in zinc you will lose it from your enamel. The enamel will break down more quickly, causing cavities. This process is especially noticeable in teenagers and young adults.

Does zinc improve nails?

This article will discuss two things: one, the importance of zinc in your nails.

And, two, whether taking zinc supplements helps nail health.

If you do decide to use a zinc supplement (I'll discuss this more below) one important thing to note is that zinc can actually reduce the growth rate of nails. The amount of zinc we get from our normal diet and zinc supplementation are only going to do so much for our nail health. Therefore, if your nails are already weak or have been breaking you need to do far more.

In summary, while zinc is great at maintaining nails it does not repair them. What are Zinc-containing Nails? As previously mentioned zinc and minerals together can be incorporated into nails. While it's important, the majority of your nails won't have any. Instead, you'll notice a yellow discoloration that can range from slightly yellow to very yellow, brown and black on your nails. You'll also notice the texture will become softer and more translucent than usual, with the potential of becoming brittle.

Zinc deficiency can occur in the form of zinc poor diets, poor absorption or loss due to heavy metal contamination from drinking water or working with contaminated materials like jewelry and machinery. Why do the majority of your nails not contain zinc? While I've not researched this I believe most of your nail plate will not contain any zinc as it's easier for us to absorb what's available to us on the inside rather than what's contained inside our nails. The majority of our zinc will come from the soil that our bodies eat from.

What is my diet deficient in? Let's look at the average American diet today. If you have food allergies and you're intolerant then your diet might seem lacking. You could be eating an apple for breakfast and be severely lacking in many different nutrients because of that.

Let's take a quick look at some of the main nutrients in food. Water. Carbohydrates. Proteins. Sugars. Fiber. Vitamins and Minerals. Minerals can be present as trace amounts in many fruits and vegetables and a small enough portion of food can give the body a sufficient source of these valuable nutrients. This is how it works with the Zinc Deficiency theory, too little zinc will keep your nails weak.

How to fix zinc deficiency?

I have a 10 month old boy who is having some symptoms of zinc deficiency.

He has been diagnosed with eczema and is on steroid cream. The doctor says it is an autoimmune disease which is being treated. He also has some skin discoloration on his back which the doctor said is not from eczema. We noticed this last summer. We also notice that his immune system is up. Our last blood work he tested negative for HIV and Hepatitis. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it.

The doctor gave us some zinc supplements, which I added to his formula. But after 5 days of adding it to his bottle he started having loose bowels. He then had some diarrhea but when we took him off the zinc his diarrhea stopped and it lasted for a day.

He started getting fussy after we added the zinc to his bottle. We noticed he is not growing as fast as his older brother who is 2 years old and he is only 6 months old. His older brother is now 16 months old and he is 10.5 kg. (23 lb) and my son is 9.7 kg. (21 lb) he is only 1 month old.

His weight has gone down from 15th percentile at birth to just barely in the 5th percentile. He is always thirsty and cries for water. His stomach is always very full. He cries all the time. He is always tired. We have been told to stop giving him zinc for a while but I am not sure what to do. His skin is soft and smooth but has a few red spots on his legs and arms. His skin gets red sometimes when he has been crying for a long time. His skin looks dry. I noticed his hair is becoming so short. He never smiles and he cries all the time. He is not eating well. We read on the internet that if your child is sick or unwell you should try to put more iron into their body. Is that true? The doctor has said that we are feeding him everything he needs. Can anyone please help me? Responses (8). Thanks for sharing your son's story with us. Please tell your doctor to give him a zinc injection to see if that helps.
