Is there 52 states in the United States?

What states are in the 50 states?

That's an excellent question.

I've written two articles for the State and Local Government Institute that explain the basics of state and county boundaries. Here's a quick excerpt from one of them:

Some states have very precise lines dividing them into smaller units. For example, California is divided into forty-eight counties. Other states have much more fluid boundaries. For example, Illinois is divided into 99 counties. The State of New York contains 26 counties. The state of New Jersey contains 21 counties. But these differences in size do not change the basic geographic unit of a state, which is usually the political entity known as a county. Sometimes states are divided into two or three counties, but these divisions are not recognized by the United States Constitution. For example, New York City and Long Island are divided into 5 separate counties.

The U. Census Bureau maintains a Web site with more information about the geography of the 50 states. This site provides information about state and county boundaries, maps, and information about the census. A link to this site is provided in the "Other Resources" section of this Web site.

If you're interested in learning more about the structure of state and local government, there are many good books that cover this topic in detail. Here's a link to the list of recommended books.

Yes, there is.

No more, and no less. I didn't make it up. If you didn't know before, please ask an expert.

Why is the state of Texas called Texas? Texas is pronounced Te-HAS-tin. If a person named Texas or Te-HAS-tin ever came across a native Texan with a fancy surname, he would pronounce it as Te-HAS-tin and they wouldn't be friends.

Why do we call them states and not states of America? Most everyone is familiar with the name of the place, which was derived from Amerigo Vespucci, who in 1497 claimed that he was the first one to discover the country and the New World. He wrote a journal of his voyages from Florence, Italy, on May 22, 1499, in which he wrote of his discovery of a country called Nueva Velada, where people lived by hunting, fishing and other means, in which they did not have iron or copper, and who dressed in cotton. The Spaniards arrived in 1519, in response to the demand of Christopher Columbus. Spanish settlement grew slowly during the first four centuries because of the fierce resistance of the Aztecs. With each passing generation, the Spanish were successful at defeating and subjugating this new people.

The Spaniards conquered the indigenous Aztecs in the 16th century. As part of the treaty with the Mexicans in 1821, Spain gave up all claims to parts of the new republic of Mexico. Mexico annexed Texas, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, San Luis Potos, Durango, and Nuevo Len to form the Mexican States of Coahuila, Texas, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas.

The Republic of Texas declared independence from Mexico in October 1836. For four years, it enjoyed military success and was recognized as a nation by several foreign governments, including France. In 1845, however, President James K.
