When I started doing this whole work from home thing, I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or a bad idea.

It was an online job, so I didn't have to be at any specific place. But I still had to have Internet, and it was pretty expensive. I think that the cost of Internet in the city is outrageous.

Can I get free access to the internet?

Why is it that I have to pay for access to the internet at home and at work?

Because of a lack of public investment in public-broadband infrastructure, it is very expensive to provide broadband to many rural areas. As a result, most ISPs have not built out fiber connections into all the areas where they do business. At the same time, the cost of building out DSL and cable systems in more populated areas is lower. In addition, many communities are unable to raise taxes or fees to cover their share of the cost. To protect themselves from competition, some communities have imposed municipal-owned franchises on these private providers. But this means that the community pays only a portion of the cost of building out the network. The remaining costs are borne by the providers.

The cost of Internet service is high in part because the federal government has not provided the public with a National Broadband Plan. If the plan is not implemented by 2025, the federal government will be unable to provide grants to help fund public-broadband projects. Even if the plan is implemented, it is not likely that all communities will be able to gain access to broadband. For example, many communities that serve as a "meeting point" for multiple communities or as an entry point to sparsely populated areas are unlikely to get any benefits from the plan. These communities will be left behind as service providers offer services to other communities.

What are the alternatives to the current access models? An alternative is to have no access at all. Communities that can't afford access or don't want it will simply be left behind. Other communities that have been granted a franchise will have to pay a high premium for service and will face the possibility that the government will subsidize another community's service.

Another alternative is to invest in a private provider that promises to serve all areas, regardless of population density. But the cost of providing service to every community is so high that most private providers will not invest in serving even those areas where there are few consumers. This means that most people who live in the rural areas that lack public-broadband access will not receive service. Even if these providers were to offer service to all communities, they would be required to charge the same high prices as large cities.

The third alternative is a community-based approach.
