How do I install Tor Browser?

Is Orfox still available?

I have an Orfox PC, which will not connect to any of my other PCs/OS's (10.1/Fedora 6 etc). But can't connect to Orfox for Windows or Mac.

Hi all,Is anyone still using orfox? As far as I know, it has never been updated in ages, and the website is rather dead too (last post was 2005). Just wondered what everyone's current status was. I'm currently looking for a replacement, but if anyone knows of something else, it'd be much appreciated.

The orfox project went out of vogue in my eyes and I stopped looking for one around 2024 or so. Unfortunately nothing had come along to replace it by 2024. I think the most recent post on the list was in June 2024.

I was looking for this recently and I was surprised to discover that it is still being maintained and updated with new releases. It only took 5-10 minutes of searching to find a PPA for it as it's still on the index. Hopefully that's the future of it.

@chilkatmccall - yes that would have been me. I used to download all the new releases, back at 12. However after downloading 12.0-a7, orfox failed miserably, and I had it up to 14.1 before I even noticed.

Is Orbot and Tor Browser the same?

I don't use Orbot regularly, so it didn't cross my mind that they were the same thing. It is obvious that the Orbot project takes care of the anonymity issues for TOR; there's very little reason to have another browser. And most Tor users are not likely to change to Orbot -- at least, not very much -- even though it probably provides more anonymity than default Tor Browser. This isn't all that surprising; even after a fairly long use period, I've never felt that there were privacy losses for the users who already have Tor running. At best, it helps prevent people from seeing whether your IP address has been leaked. So, again, I'd still stick with Tor.

And in short, yes it is just a wrapper around an already operating TOR, and we can use it (in conjunction with Orbot) to avoid all the headaches Tor Browser has with its poor anti-anonymity features (for example when using it through VPNs). I had a similar case. When I use both Tor Browser and Orbot, and visit websites that Tor Browser doesn't handle well (such as Gmail for example), Orbot always gives me a nice private IP from the US so that the website thinks I am coming from the US, where privacy is far easier. Then I can access the site from any country, without having to use some crappy VPN website.

Can I download Tor Browser?

You can download Tor Browser 0.

15 directly from the following link. It comes in both 64 and 32 bit architectures.

If you want to install it, please make sure to use .tar.bz2 files, not .gz or any other archive formats. Make sure to add "Signed-off-by" information with your contact details if you are doing a bug report on Github.

How to uninstall it? In case of troubles, you may simply delete downloaded folder Tor Browser 0. If you're unable to locate where it has been installed, please restart your PC. There will be a short period of time in which Tor Browser is uninstalled, but you can always recover it by just reinstalling it.

When to Update Tor Browser? Tor Browser 0.15 has security fixes for CVE-2017-1000368, CVE-2016-1190, CVE-2016-1191, CVE-2016-3681, and CVE-2016-3683. These security patches were already incorporated into Tor Browser's source tree so they won't bring new vulnerabilities. As such, we don't recommend any kind of rolling upgrades.

But if you know you can't wait for next updates, we suggest to grab Tor Browser 0.
