What is Java SDET?
Java SDET is a Java project management system for Software Developers, which provides project management features and services in a Java-based solution.
It's free and open-source. The project has an official website. What do you need to build a Java SDET application? To build a Java SDET application, the main requirements are Java 6, Maven 3 and Git. In addition, a Web-server must be installed to host the Apache Tomcat web server. Also, all the source codes used by Java SDET application must be added as libraries or installed on the system.

How much does SDET certification cost?
SDET certification is a big commitment in terms of both time and money.

SDET Certification Process. Applying for SDET certification takes approximately 90 minutes. The first step involves creating an account with the SDET Testing Consortium. After you've completed an initial application, you'll be asked to go over a test case and complete an optional instructional exam. At this stage, you may want to take the optional instructional exam to get an idea of what the certification is about. It is recommended that you do not test-drive any of the software unless it is mandatory or part of the instructional exam. The last step involves uploading your answers to the online proctoring system where they will be graded and checked by an SDET Technical Advisor. If the answers are correct, the fee for the SDET is calculated and charged to your credit card. Applicants receive a receipt for their payment after their test is submitted.

What is SDET training?
SDET training is the most fun I have ever had in my life! This is my 6th SDET training with my current employer and I am so glad I enrolled. SDET training allowed me to feel like I was a real engineer and it also helped me learn so much about engineering as well. I am glad that I started training with this organization.
SDET training is the path to becoming an Electronic Systems Engineer (ESE) who works on the Electronic System Development Team (ESD Team). As the OP is a student, the question is really not well-formed, since I have no expertise in Software Development as I am myself an academic/scientist with no experience (yet) in the field. This being so, rather than giving an actual answer, here are my comments.
From the perspective of an academic, the answer to such questions would depend on what type of graduate studies (masters/doctorate, etc.) one might be pursuing and what institution/country one might be doing the research in. In my own case, it is important to stress that I am myself a self-taught academic, and while we have courses for graduate students at many universities, all of those are theoretical in nature, as the practical experience of being a developer is beyond most graduate programs of the past (and even some modern ones, which emphasize theoretical aspects). Thus, for me as an academic (in the Netherlands, where I am based), I personally would consider "certification" of my academic/industrial work completely absurd and therefore meaningless, especially if my goal is to pursue my scientific research.
In other countries like India, Australia, and the UK, however, I imagine such certification would be mandatory. I think in general, one would see such certifications if one were to work industry (perhaps starting a family and having to earn a living would mean that the academic life would cease to exist), or as required for a position one is holding (such as, if as an architect, you were required by law to have an Architect's Certificate before practicing). But in all honesty, my only qualification in this situation is that there should be such a thing as an Associate Degree in Software Development, and that is definitely a far cry from any sort of academic "certification".
