What is SOCKS5 VPN?

Is SOCKS5 still working?
We migrated our proxy servers to SOCKS5 as we have IPv6 support now.
Unfortunately, no dice - SOCKS5 is broken on IPv6 networks at the moment.
My server has been up for 2 days now but it's not working at all. There's zero activity on it and it's not using any network resources at all. We've checked DNS records (both forward and reverse) in the name server settings and those look fine. I'm using the latest version of OpenSsh so it's entirely possible this is a version issue (I'm on 5.3).
We've searched everywhere on the internet but can't find anything similar to our setup that explains what's happening. Any thoughts? SOCKS5 is still functioning even on IPv6 networks. To prove this to ourselves, we added back in IPv6 access to one of our client machines at work. The client was using WinSCP behind a SOCKS5 proxy to our corporate mail system.
The machine connected perfectly, sending messages out and receiving messages in. On a whim I did an apt-get remove of OpenSSH and the OpenSSH client WinSCP failed to connect. So the OS was indeed not listening on the IPv6 port 22.
But, using a traceroute from the machine's Internet facing interface I saw my company's web-proxy respond, in a non-specific way. It's possible this is their own internal-only web server responding, since the connection isn't being allowed out and it's using a random address from their private address space.
So to ensure that OpenSSH is handling IPv6 sockets, try configuring that client to use a different, local address range. Maybe 10.1-10.100.
On a related note, I had a lot of problems with IPV6 last year with the same machine, which was a brand new i5 running a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It was not letting connections out over IPV6 so I had to force them in for some reason and never used those addresses. Just use whatever addresses you find in ifconfig, assuming they're routable in your network.
