Is Vivaldi a spyware?

Does it download stuff that it will keep track of?

Do you even need to install Vivaldi if you don't want it to do all that? Well, let me start off by saying that I am not a paid up member of the Vivaldi team, but a fellow user. This post is the result of trying to get some answers to these questions for myself.

Does Vivaldi automatically download other software? What does it mean? I had been reading about Vivaldi and was fascinated by the free-software community behind it. The Vivaldi website describes how it is a secure browser with a minimalist user interface. This looks promising for a browser that is free.

When I downloaded it, it told me it was going to download some updates. There were three updates listed, though not all of them had checked boxes next to their names. The three that did were for the Opera browser, the Vivaldi browser itself, and some sort of update that can't be read without special font. After I unzipped the file and clicked on "Start", I then found it had also downloaded two other files. In all, it had downloaded over 70MBs of other software (as of June 2019). These files are listed as follows:

The Vivaldi Browser. Vivaldi Update 1.0 Opera Software Update 4.3

Opera Software Update 4.2 Opera Software Update 4.5.2

Chrome Remote Desktop (beta). Chrome Updater. Chrome Download Manager. Opera Web Browser 2.2 Opera Web Browser 2.6.4

Opera Web Browser 3.2 I do not know why this happened. I was just using Vivaldi as a browser and I guess the installer went ahead and did whatever it was supposed to do. What I don't know is if I need all of this and if so, why I need it. I will not try to figure out what I need because I am not sure I even know myself. I know my Vivaldi browser has now become bloated and has a lot of useless programs on it.

Is Vivaldi Browser trustworthy?

Hi I just got the Vivaldi Browser today and I really like it, I've used Chrome for years some of this is new to me. I noticed that sometimes (and i'm not talking about websites) the URL bar goes crazy all the way up to the top, and I really don't know what's causing it. Anyone else had this issue? I noticed that sometimes (and i'm not talking about websites) the URL bar goes crazy all the way up to the top, and I really don't know what's causing it. That's normal and just a visual effect which is controlled by your window manager. If you have the "URL" textbox in the addressbar you can change it's size to a normal size with the key combination CTRL-P. This means that it will be exactly as big as the other textboxes in the browser window but not bigger.

Thanks that's exactly what I was thinking about! The only thing is there any issues that come with this setting in firefox or does the same setting apply there? This makes a lot of sense! I'm so used to having it small that the extra width would bother me. How do you get to your favourites? I can't seem to find a way to open it.

Which is better Chrome or Vivaldi?

I am using google chrome Version 61.0.3163.100 and Vivaldi Version 2.1
They both have a similar interface with slightly different looks. I just like the look of vivaldi better. Both are different in many ways, but Chrome is based on chromium, while Vivaldi is it's own standalone browser. Both are built from scratch and support multiple features, and are built for different operating systems, so it depends on your preferences, you may prefer one over the other. You should try them out, see if they are more suited to you.

Why not use Vivaldi?

I use it every day.

I think you may not have tried using Vivaldi, but I don't think it's very usable, it's quite unusable actually.

Quote: Why? I find that it's quite easy to find and follow links to websites using chrome. However this doesn't seem to be the case with chromium-browser.

Yes it is. Click on a link in Vivaldi, that opens in the default browser. You can click on anything. Open a new tab in the same browser and click on something else. That's what is meant by opening a window. In Vivaldi it opens in a new tab. Other browsers simply open another browser window, and when you close that window it has no idea where it was opened from.

For me the problem is not so much with Chromium but more that this version of Chrome hasn't received any updates since May. Also it seems to crash quite frequently. When I first got chrome I did get lots of crashes, but those problems seem to be solved now. I'm still running version 32.0.1700.107 which I got in the early spring. It's been great, no bugs and very stable.

Not sure I see how your reasoning relates to what I said? I'm running version 41.2272.96 and it's very stable.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I'm now going to try out Chromium again, perhaps with Vivaldi.e. I also need to get my Mac back up and running, so that's a whole other matter.

No you didn't, you were asking and gave your reasons, I simply replied. I have to admit to not liking Chrome. I just think Vivaldi is more pleasant and stable. But I like the fact that you can do all sorts of cool things in Vivaldi that aren't possible with Chrome. I never suggested otherwise. I did say Vivaldi is unstable though and crashes a lot. A couple of days ago I had to restart twice as it wouldn't connect to my WiFi.e. If you think it's easier to use, go ahead and use Vivaldi instead of Chrome. Then we can compare.
