Online remote access is when a user can access their web based application and edit information on the device that they are using to access it from.

The online access will be provided by the VPN server that has the client (or device). For example, a user can use a smartphone with them to access their office application from home. In this example, they would use their cell phone as a client and the VPN server would be the office application. What are the types of online remote access? There are three basic types of online remote access. Single-user access: This is the easiest type of online remote access and it is limited to only one user. It is limited to a single user because if two people try to connect to the same account, they can both see what is going on at once. This type of online remote access is ideal for home use as it doesn't require any extra hardware to create the connection. It is also ideal for small businesses as one user doesn't need to be connected to the internet. For businesses, this is the most secure option because only a single device is being used for access. Public: In the public type, more than one person can access the application remotely at the same time. This is ideal for businesses because it reduces the risk of losing or corrupting sensitive data. This type of online remote access is ideal for businesses with large volumes of data as it saves on the cost of a VPN server for just a few employees. Business-to-business (B2B): When two business are using online remote access together, it is called business-to-business access. This type of online remote access is ideal for businesses as they can get full control over how their data is transmitted. When two companies are using online remote access together, they can use this type of access to transfer files to each other. B2B access is suitable for companies that require sensitive data to be transferred to other companies. Business-to-consumer (B2C): This type of online remote access is ideal for small to medium businesses that are using online remote access for customers. B2C is used to transfer information or services between a business and a customer.

In SharePoint 2024, the Remote Access Service Application is part of the Office Web Apps server role. But this service application is actually an independent server role. You can run it on its own without having to add another server role to your farm, and you don't need to have any other server roles installed to have access to this service application.

What do I need it for? The Remote Access Service Application helps to provide access to the SharePoint sites hosted on the server. It lets you browse to your SharePoint site or application, and open it in an app, while staying at the same site. The URL to your SharePoint site does not change when you open an app using the Remote Access Service Application. This means that you can log in to your SharePoint site just by typing the URL instead of navigating to it through the browser. Using the Remote Access Service Application, you can:

Browse to your SharePoint sites and access them in the browser using the URL for your site. Open your SharePoint sites from the browser using the remote access applet. The Remote Access Service Application is used as a gateway in client environments. If your organization has multiple remote users, your users will be redirected to your remote users (via OWA) and then redirected back to the central user.

When does the Remote Access Service Application need to run on the server? Remote Access needs to run on the server so that your users can access their SharePoint sites from the browser. In client environments, the Remote Access service application can run on a dedicated server.

How does the Remote Access Service Application work? The Remote Access Service Application uses the remote access applet in Microsoft Office Web Apps 2024 to connect to your SharePoint site in the browser.
