How to connect CCTV to DDNS?
Question.
I have a video surveillance system which consists of 2 CCTV camera and two DVR. I can connect these devices to the local network and the internet via ethernet cables. I want to connect this system to a D-link home router as it has the DDNS facility. Can I do this without changing the IP address?
Please advise what is the right direction in which to look to connect CCTV, DVR to DDNS and also the right type of router which can fulfil this need. Answer. CCTV cameras are connected to the DVR via coax cables. The DVR needs to be connected to your ISP's modem/router by an ethernet cable. Then the network switch (which is connected to the DVR) is connected to the D-Link router (or whatever you're using).
That should work. You can control all the DVR/camera equipment remotely from your DDNS name. DDNS is just a DNS service that will give you a different host name every time you renew your account. So instead of your normal web address (for example, ), you'd get a DDNS name (say, home.comcast.net). It's free, really convenient and no more than a minute or two of work to set up.
If you want to use something a bit more elaborate, you may want to use WebVLAN. This would allow you to add multiple servers behind a single DDNS name. WebVLAN allows for the creation of multiple IP networks in your home which can be configured to have their own DNS names. Then your surveillance system could communicate with these networks just like any other server in your network.
You would have to setup the DVR, then DVR can connect to either a PC or a phone so that you could take control of it. That was what my mother did, she installed a PDA on the router of the CCTV, and when it detected something weird on the CCTV, it sends a message to her PDShe has a screen on her TV, and when she presses it, the data is sent to the remote server. You can also have it so that when the computer on your DVR logs in, it automatically turns on the PC. You can also have it so that, as soon as you turn it on, it connects to your server and logs in.
