I've used static DNS through OpenDNS to map hostnames to IPs for more than 5 years. It's fast, the mapping is very accurate and easy to set up and you just create/delete names as needed. However, there are many other good DNS services like OpenDNS and Google Public DNS that offer similar features.

My question is - when my router and ISP get an update to their DNS system do they have to tell me somehow so that I can change them back? My host file on my Linux machine redirects any non-existing domains to OpenDNS but then once I update it, does the router go through and re-point my host name to the old DNS? Is that where my problem with OpenDNS is? Am I better off using dynamic DNS where my hosting service provider sets it up and sends a notification of changes every day or week or every time my DNS settings get changed, etc. I think this is also the case with OpenDNS so maybe its how I do business is my only issue? Also, do your hosting providers offer dynamic DNS service and if so what do they tell you to do to make sure your site isn't overwritten and your host files don't interfere? For example, is the host file a blocking file? Should a DNS provider tell you that if you remove your own Host file you have to put back those DNS rules, etc. And that removing your own Host file makes your site inoperable on the internet because of the redirects on your host machine? It is an httpd blocking file. (If it were a ftp blocking file it would be a very bad thing).

As far as dynamic DNS service with my hosting provider, I will make sure I ask what they want me to do and ask if there is anything else I need to know about it or can do differently since they are managing it.
