Is Google discontinuing Google Keep?
I'm sure you've heard that Google Keep has been discontinued, with no plans to come back in the foreseeable future.
At first I was bummed, then confused, and now I'm a little pissed. Here's the story, in my own words:
When Google announced the discontinuation of Google Keep, I was disappointed. Why? Because I use Google Keep for its note-taking features. It's an app that I've tried to keep up with (on my iPhone, Android, and Chrome), but it's never really kept up with me.
I started using Google Keep in 2025, as soon as the app was released. I downloaded it from the iTunes Store, synced my phone and tablet, and have been using it since. I've loved it since day one. I've also been annoyed by it on occasion.
Google Keep has evolved over the years, starting with the simple note-taking app and evolving into a full-fledged to-do list manager. It's a tool I've used daily for the last 4 years, and one that I use often.
Google Keep is still a great tool to manage tasks, but I'm missing the ability to take notes. I would love a replacement for Evernote or Google Docs, but there's not one. If you're looking for a replacement, you'll have to look elsewhere.
I use Google Keep for tasks, calendar, and notes. All of those things are replaced by Trello and Google Sheets. I used to use Google Calendar for tasks, but Trello works perfectly for that purpose. If you're looking for a replacement, I can't help you.
Now that Google Keep is gone, there's note taking feature. I was surprised to hear that this feature was going away. I've used Google Keep to write notes on everything from shopping lists to what I ate for dinner. The only note-taking feature I missed was voice dictation. If I were writing this post, I would have used the voice dictation feature to take notes and write paragraphs. Now I'm stuck typing notes.
I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I hope there are alternatives.
Is Google Keep completely free?
We're all aware that Google Keep is now completely free for Android, iOS and the web.
What I mean by that is it is no longer restricted to G Suite subscribers. If you want to install the app, you can download it here from the Google Play Store or here from the App Store. You'll then be prompted to sign in using your Gmail account. If you don't already have an account, don't worry, it's free and doesn't involve any of your data.
From there on in, it's all nice and simple. There are plenty of other apps in the Google Play Store which you may wish to try out before heading for Keep (as well as many more online), but for those who are already committed to Google's cloud platform, there is no better way to keep track of things than with Google Keep.
