Is a game tester a hard job?
Do games testers get paid a lot more than writers?
And if they did, is it worth the money and time to become a game tester? Read on for our answers to these questions and a little bit more too.
Do Game Testers Make Enough Money? If you're a freelance game writer, you probably have a rough idea about how much you make on average per article. That said, it all depends on the type of freelance work that you have available. In some companies, it may be difficult to gain freelancing work. So, if you have no other options, I'm sure that you'll be happy to at least do some part-time freelance work testing.
And since most companies don't expect you to do just gaming tests, you can probably still find enough freelance work as a writer or journalist to make the majority of your living wage. So, if you're looking for ways to start making a full-time salary, freelance work as a game tester may just be what you need to do. How Do Game Testers Get Paid? The same as freelance game developers - You may be hired by a game development company to work as a game tester. And you can be hired to find bugs within their game. If you know someone at that company that can get you on as a writer or editor, you can probably get more paid writing jobs.
You can also receive payment from game studios when you find bugs that need to be fixed.
Is game tester a stressful job?
Absolutely.
I'm a fairly average employee. I work on-site and work very hard, not particularly fast.
When I first became game tester, I had just graduated with a bachelor's in physics from a prestigious (at the time) university in a southern state. However, I'd flunked out of my first college class by my junior year (which is common for the kids graduating high school and making their way to a college -- but this time, all it took was one day to get a letter saying I failed at school).
After a conversation with a coworker, I decided to take two courses, English, and Physics II. Two easy-going guys, one of whom (who I think is a senior employee) went out of his way to put me up in a senior apartment and paid for meals in a local diner twice a week for me. I took extra classes that winter, so I wound up with a few extra credits my junior year. My junior year started me off with a B+
In the fall, my GPA for the year would be 3.5. A 3.5 from the south would get me a spot into most programs, including most major universities in the north, like a top-tier public university.
That fall, though, I became ill and had to miss 2 weeks of class. I knew I had to make up lost ground if I wanted to achieve anything in life, so I went about remedying my situation. Instead of taking classes I thought I needed (which are much more work than classes you're "meeting" at an after-school, Saturday-morning gym), I took a test to see if I was even good enough for the high-level physics classes I actually needed. The test took me around 3-4 hours to take, so I figured "hey, I'm going to try another time."
On my return to school the next week, all I could get was a B+ But I didn't care -- I wasn't there for grades. I told the instructor I got sick and didn't know why I missed the exam (didn't mention I took a test), and took more classes. They were pretty much open enrollment, meaning anyone in line before me could get the spot.

How much do video game testers make?
While doing that I'm looking for the most rewarding job that gives me lots of opportunity for advancement. If I wanted to work in video game testing I'd like to know how much it pays so I can plan accordingly.
I don't know about your area, but I'm in Chicago and on average a tester makes 30k - 50k. You'll probably see your pay jump quickly to the mid-40's if you're good enough, if you get a tester job now.
The thing to remember is that you're still in the education process. If you're good enough, you should be able to pick up jobs as a tester, and you'll see your salary double.
Edit: I'd also add that this is all local. What I've seen is that I can make more money in Chicago than my friends in Texas.
