THE CHANGING OF THE Guard. As the new series begins filming at the end of this year, the cast and crew of the new Star Trek are beginning to take shape. In this article we will take a brief look at some of the principal cast members, whose roles will change in the new Star Trek TV series, as well as looking at the names of various characters in the script. As the series gets nearer to airing there will be regular updates here on the site with the latest news and announcements.

Here is the original line up for the new Star Trek cast. They were named at that time and there may or may not be changes over the coming months. The roles listed at the beginning of the thread were based on an early version of the new series which was eventually cancelled. It didn't look at all likely to happen. The cast and crew are all working well together, so it seems much more likely it will happen now than it did six months ago.

Sonequa Martin-Green is the only new cast member listed thus far (see right), so our 'guess' has been that either her character or someone else's character has taken her place, rather than a name change. T is played by the former TNG star, Brent Spiner. If his name is being changed, then it must be for another part, although I really have no idea why he would be taken off this role, although perhaps a different character? R was played by Terry Farrell. Again, nothing seems to point to her having been written out. It seems to me a fair assumption that she will play a different role in the new Star Trek TV series.

The official Star Trek: Discovery trailer is out now, and it's clear that when it comes to Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), the series has found its central protagonist. The first episode of Discovery, Context Is for Kings, revolves around Lorca's rise to power and his plan to eliminate the dilithium mines on Lothal. (Yes, it's a very Star Trek-y way of setting up an arc.) The trailer shows Lorca orchestrating a coup in a Klingon-like manner, which seems to fit with what we know of the character. (We've seen him lead a small squad of Klingons in Star Trek: Into Darkness, so that's something.)

But the trailer also shows us a great deal about Lorca's love life, particularly with T'Kuvma, the leader of the Discovery's first enemy. So before the trailer was released, I called up Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman to get some answers on the most pressing questions about Lorca's personal life. And by the end of the conversation, we learned that while he did indeed meet Spock and T'Pring on the Discovery, they didn't exactly stay together.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I know that Spock is a character who is very good at compartmentalizing things but what did he feel when he met T'Pring? Did it take him a little while to adjust to it? And he does know how to ask for it, which is what we see in the trailer with his line, I'd like to take her as my wife.
