The Comodo site says I need to renew but when I click on the link to Renew Comodo, it says I have an expired license key and cannot be renewed. You could try downloading and installing the ISO, but I think the current version of Comodo will probably not work with it. That's the version I installed and it works great. I have been trying to upgrade to the latest version and it will not let me do it. The only way I was able to get past it was to change the product key so that it would go back to "inactive" status and then I could update it.

I am not sure if it's a good idea to get Comodo now. It's probably best to wait until Comodo does another free version (if they do).

A real AV suite does multiple services including the following: Basic malware checker. Malware analysis & threat database. File integrity check. Antivirus signatures database. AV removal tool. It's free as in "free trial" which usually means it will be at least 5 days and will cost your time (usually) when you are done. It's paid as in "paid for by the company". The price depends on the plan/contract of the antivirus.

Some of them are really expensive while others are free. I used McAfee VirusScan since years and got a 7 day trial a while ago. It is a free basic malware/adware scanner. For a "real" antivirus suite I'd use Avast Free AV.
