Does Google have OCR software?
In the last couple of days I've been researching OCR software to see what type of program would best for the following purposes: Search through the PDF's of books in my library. Scan in PDF's of any documents that I want to store for later use. The first option is fairly easy. Since my library is fairly small, I'd only need a single machine to perform the task. However, it's not always easy to know what machines to buy. I'd also like to have the ability to store documents in digital format for easy access. The main problem I have with OCR is that it can be finicky, and I don't really know what the best solution is. A quick google search will bring up many options, but I was hoping there was a specific, easy to use program that did all this. Thanks for any help!
You could try an inexpensive OCR program on your PC that will turn scanned images into searchable text. You can probably find something like that at the local computer shop or the bookstore. For scanning PDFs, you will probably need a device that has a scanner built in.
I used to use a little program called "Acrobat" (a program for handling PDF files) and then the free version of "Scanner Pro". Both of these programs are free. I like Acrobat a lot more than Scanner Pro. Acrobat lets you annotate and tag files and then search for annotations. It also lets you save files in various formats. It works well for PDFs.
I use a HP Scanjet 6300C and can scan in high quality and low quality. Then I use xsane to make the scans look better and then OCR to convert them to text. I also scan directly to the text so it is easier to get around the occasional typo.
I'm sure there are other programs that do this too. I just use one that is free, that I like, and I would recommend.
I have had the same dilemma. In fact, I went through the same struggle as you. I have gone through every OCR program out there (even those that cost more than my computer).
My dilemma is that I have never found a product that is easy to use, stable and doesn't cause me more headaches than its worth.
