Which is better OpenVPN or PPTP?

The question I am trying to answer is whether OpenVPN or PPTP would be the best solution for an organization that requires network access from behind a firewall.

The client side of the network is Linux with both a Windows and Linux environment. Our organization has a large number of Linux servers, some with a Windows server environment but our primary Linux enviroment is Linux. My question is which one is better, OpenVPN or PPTP? We use a variety of services including MS Exchange 2026, WebEx, Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop, and a variety of internal systems such as SAP applications. The users we have are very diverse in skill level and it is very difficult for us to find out how any of our connections are being established. We don't have any control over the Linux server and the only option we have with this network is VPNs. We do not want the VPN users to have complete control over the network but we also don't want to put all the risks associated with PPTP connections with all our users. PPTP connections are working on all our Windows workstations and on most of the Linux servers with clients connecting without problems. One of our server configurations has a Linux server connected to the Internet through OpenVPN and the firewall uses the PPTP connection. We are thinking of removing this PPTP connection and replacing it with a OpenVPN connection. The only advantage I see to this is that I can set up a PPTP connection so the users connecting through the network can take advantage of PPTP to connect to resources such as WebEx but I feel this should have been taken care of with setting up OpenVPN and not using PPTP in the first place.

I have seen various articles online suggesting that PPTP connections are more secure than OpenVPN and I can only find articles that are specific to Microsoft environments, however the same things applies here. I just can't find articles that discuss the security of both connections from a broader stand point that would make it easier to decide between them. Does anyone know if PPTP is really more secure than OpenVPN? Or is this something that is not discussed on the net as there is really no debate over whether to use PPTP or OpenVPN? Any information regarding the security issues of either connection would be greatly appreciated.

Is L2TP outdated?

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with using L2TP on a small or large network. I think this is an old protocol, and if I had to guess, I'd say that it's been around for a good 5-6 years now. However, I haven't really used it myself, so I don't know what it's like. I have a home network of about 7 devices, and I want to implement a VPN on it. The only thing I know of is to use IPSec, but that seems to be very costly for our setup.

Now I'm not saying that I want to replace IPSec entirely, I just want to know if there are other options besides using IPSec (like L2TP). The best way to do it is to get the most accurate answer I can by asking someone who has implemented and used it before. With that in mind, I have a few questions.

) Do I need to use a server (for example, Cisco IOS) to implement L2TP?) If the answer to the previous question is yes, what kinds of networks will be affected by not using a server?) Can my home network still work even though it has L2TP? I'm thinking about something like this: Does anyone have any insight into L2TP? I'm trying to figure out how the heck to use it correctly, and the forums are not answering my questions. I've worked a lot on security solutions over the past few years, and I have to tell you that "solving" security problems is incredibly tedious. It's a long and tedious process, and you're lucky if you find a solution that works. On the other hand, once you get a solution that works, it becomes an amazing tool to handle security problems in your network.

IMHO, L2TP is the best way to go as long as you have enought knowledge. If you got to understand how IPSec works, you can implement an L2TP solution. The best way to do it is to ask yourself questions like :

How many clients are involved

Is it just a few personal computers or a lot of equipments

What is the range you need

Will it be worldwide (to see the USA) or just in your home country ?

Is OpenVPN better than L2TP?

Which would you prefer to use with your OpenVPN setup?
