Did Antonio Vivaldi compose religious or non religious music?
I've heard that Vivaldi was a non religious composer.
I've also heard that Vivaldi's music was religious and that he worked on some of the greatest works of Western music, like the Seasons and the 24 concerti, while being "inwardly" religious.
He was very interested in both (or possibly all), but his non-religious nature and his interest in religious subjects are sometimes confused. For example, his Concerto Grosso in B minor is an example of a piece that is clearly non-religious. On the other hand, the second movement of his "Concerto For Timpani, Strings, Organ & Basso continuo in D major, K. 467" is a prayer for the destruction of evil and the end of the world.
And he apparently used texts and imagery from the Bible in his works. Here is one of many examples, from Vivaldi's "Concerto Grosso in B minor": Vivaldi wrote many other pieces using biblical text as inspiration, for example "La Notte degli Innocenti" (The Night of the Innocents) and "L'invenzione della fiamma" (The Invention of the Torch). "The only Christian composer who was widely read in his own time" (according to Wikipedia). So perhaps by modern standards he's not that, but he has a following even today. It is more correct to say that Vivaldi was a very religious man than that he was a "non religious" composer. As is typical of many Catholic Italians at the time, Vivaldi was a devoutly religious man who believed that God himself was in every part of his life and that he, Vivaldi, had a special role to play. This special role Vivaldi considered to be part of his divine service, just as every other individual had a special role to play as part of the service of God.
This notion of Vivaldi's role in his relationship with God was expressed in his church music as the most explicit and literal application of the sacred text that he was writing for. Vivaldi used the Bible as his source material, rather than just his own spiritual thoughts. The word for "composer" in Italian means "song writer" and so he was singing the texts of the bible for others.
