What are the best VPNs? ExpressVPN seems to be the most popular VPN service of all time. It's been around since 2023 and has over 3 million customers. So it's safe to say that it is one of the more popular VPN services. However, what is it that makes ExpressVPN stand out from the rest?

I have been using ExpressVPN for over a year now and am currently subscribed to their 'Pro' package. They offer a large number of features and extras including: The service is currently available in over 120 countries. You can connect as many devices as you like to the same account (you get 5 devices per account). Pricing is reasonable for the service they provide. Speed. One of the most important things about a VPN is the speed of your connection. When using ExpressVPN I have not experienced any connection issues at all. I have connected my PC and Macbook Air to the VPN and it has connected instantly and never failed.

The only time I have ever had a problem connecting was when I was in Singapore. In Singapore, you need to use a specific VPN server. If you use the standard Singapore server, it will take forever to connect. This means that there is a lot of traffic to Singapore and it might take a long time to connect. When I was using the Singapore server I would not connect for about 5-10 minutes. When I switched to the standard server and connected instantly it meant that ExpressVPN was very quick to connect.

When I was in China, the connection was extremely slow. It was so slow, that I couldn't even use my laptop to watch Netflix! I know that Netflix is not great for speed, but it is definitely very slow when using China as a server.

Even though there are lots of servers to choose from, there is no difference in speed between them. It is always extremely fast.

Security. One of the most important things when using a VPN is security. If you are using a VPN, it is best to make sure that you know which server you are connecting to. You want to make sure that you are connecting to the correct server.

When using ExpressVPN, this is easy to do. When you connect to the VPN, it shows you the server that you are currently connected to.

Is Surfshark better than ExpressVPN?

Both providers come bundled with lots of features. The main complaint that some people have with ExpressVPN is its lack of in-depth, feature-rich options. Sure, they have dozens of server locations and a ton of useful apps for both Windows and macOS, but the main reason why people use ExpressVPN is for convenience: it lets them access content on their mobile device no matter where they are.

Is Surfshark any good as a VPN?

Surfshark seems to have received a lot of good press recently, which prompted us to ask the question, can it be used as a VPN? The answer is yes and no. You see Surfshark have two 'products': their own software (called Surfshark) and a subscription to their service (which is called Surfshark Pro). Surfshark themselves call this a Hybrid VPN. We call it 'hacking', but don't bother arguing with the marketing department over semantics! We think what they mean by hybrid is that you get access to apps on your mobile devices (via Surfshark Mobile) while using their free service. Surfshark have been praised for the quality of the apps and for providing them for free.

The other, and much more important, part of the hybrid VPN concept is the way in which it works. That is to say, how Surfshark provide a network of servers which you use to log into when you are not connected to the internet (in other words when you are using your mobile device). Surfshark call this an 'on-the-fly' VPN. We'll come back to this later.

To understand the hybrid VPN concept, you have to know how Surfshark operates. It works by you logging into their servers using your credentials, once logged in you use your mobile device to download apps onto your phone and away you go! Surfshark have put a lot of thought into making this a seamless process. They have not just designed the app for iOS and Android, they have designed their server network to be efficient in dealing with all types of users.

Once logged in, and if the app is compatible with your device, you will then be able to use the device as if you were connected to the internet, regardless of where you are. There is one notable difference between their hybrid VPN and other VPN services, although there is only one server, they provide two connections.
