Is Surfshark VPN free?

What happened to Surfshark?

I really liked Surfshark, since the company was started by some of the folks that developed Goto. Goto wasn't an app designed for the task of helping people surf the Internet as opposed to simply searching text within the same environment that a content aggregator like Yahoo! or Google uses. Goto made surfing the web easier than with search by using the same methods users did: opening a URL in a new tab/window and using a shortcut key combination to search text quickly and effectively.

Surfshark was created by these same developers from Goto to take the idea of Goto on a whole other level: an interface where you didn't have to go through text-heavy, bloated websites as it was originally done in Goto. Instead, you could surf the internet just like a news aggregator! This is why Surfshark had a clean interface featuring all the usual tabs and navigation features that you'd find in a Google Toolbar type website. It was my dream that Surfshark could evolve into my dream that Goto.com would evolve into Google. I hoped Surfshark users could do the task of finding the information they sought and even navigate around Web content much the same way you can do with sites like Yahoo!, but with an interface that did what surfers do, by clicking on links from articles and having a simple page load after every action.

Unfortunately, I didn't foresee one fact: Surfshark has now been discontinued. The company is only a few years old, and it had barely made a dime. I can't explain why Surfshark was discontinued. I just know why - too much time, not enough money. I hope there's still someone out there who was interested in Goto as I am in surfing the Web today. Someone out there, please let us know if you are. Thanks.

If anyone else is still interested in Surfshark - and you want me to tell everyone this post here when ever they've asked for it - please email me at dmitry@surfshark. Thanks for taking interest in your surfers' future! It's hard to say whether Surfshark will be around in the long run or not. I don't think they were given the resources to get much done, though I could be wrong.

Can I trust Surfshark VPN?

There's a lot of hype surrounding this service, even from people who are not directly associated with it. While I have yet to personally try the service out, I have read some positive as well as some negative reviews on both reddit and twitter. There have been issues such as people claiming to have had problems with it, while others say that it worked for them.

In a nutshell, Surfshark aims to offer a completely free service. If that's your kind of thing, then why not give it a go? And remember, it is totally free, no matter how many servers you have installed. That's right, you can have hundreds or thousands of servers all in one account if you wish.

You need to be careful though. Surfshark do not support open VPN clients or other applications that require installation. Their VPN software is only available for download through their website. They will also make changes to your current computer without any confirmation. It may work at the time, but the next time it loads, it could get blocked. Some users of the service say that they have actually lost internet access when this has happened.

And that's all fine if you really trust Surfshark. But what happens when you don't? Let's see.

First, what should I look for when I decide whether I want to sign up for this VPN service? Before I say much, I'll tell you my experiences using Surfshark. So far, it has worked fine for me - but I'm only using it at home, and my own ISP uses IPv6 so my connection is usually limited to a single point (at least it seems that way) rather than an entire subnet. This can cause issues when using IPsec (eg OpenVPN), but as we will see later, that's probably not the end of the world. Also, I have not used Surfshark for a while, so it might have changed. I'll use the following to try and answer some questions I might have:

Do they have apps for all OSes? Do they have support for IPsec (or possibly other) VPN protocols? Can I connect to multiple servers at once, without having to pick one? Is it good for torrenting?
