What is the difference between the dark web and deep web?
And what can you do with it?
Here, we explain all.
What is the Dark web? What is Deep web? These are two of the most important questions to ask before even looking at information security. They are commonly confused. The dark web and the deep web are two different, but interrelated things. Let's start with the definitions:
This refers to a collection of web pages that users of Tor, Freenet or I2P have to choose from in order to browse the web. This was originally used as anonymising network before the invention of Tor browser. There are different 'dark web's' which use different protocols such as I2P, Tor and Freenet. As a result, their websites, apps, and services also differ. For instance, I2P, developed by the Italian company Inode, is more anonymous than Tor. On the other hand, I2P is known to be less secure than Tor.
But there are no differences in the fact that many people call them the same thing. So they could both be considered as dark web. The difference between the dark web and the deep web is that the former is just a collection of websites, while the latter refers to websites, pages and content that are not indexed by search engines such as Google and Bing.
To use the dark web, you have to find the address of the website you want to access, and that involves entering a darknet address into your search engine of choice. Examples include using Google dark. On the other hand, deepwebexplorer.org can be used to search for websites.
The deep web refers to a different category of websites that are not on the surface web - aka the surface web. The way the deep web and the surface web interact is that the content on the deep web is usually hidden from search engines like Google. But there are exceptions to this rule, such as the Silk Road, an online black market operated by Ross Ulbricht. This is because this site allows its users to see what other people are searching for and finding online, even without using a search engine. Silk Road and other Darknet sites usually provide links to TOR and I2P.
How do you access the dark web?
The most popular way to access the dark web is to use the Tor browser.
The Tor browser uses encryption and multiple layers of security to hide your identity, but still allows you to browse the deep web safely. Tor is an essential tool for those who wish to do more than simply surf the deep web. It's also been used in the past to hide the source of leaked NSA documents and to help whistleblowers leak info about government corruption. So how do you get started? Let's take a look.
Quick Start Guide. First, download the Tor browser for your operating system from here. This method is known as offline because you don't need an internet connection to use Tor. It's a good idea to download the latest release version available in case there's been a security update since you last installed it. It's also a good idea to select the English option when downloading so that you can easily translate all the text in the Tor browser.
Next, create a new password for your Tor Browser and make it difficult to guess. Create a strong password, which you should never reuse. You can also use a password manager to generate strong random passwords, like LastPass. Once you've got a strong password for your Tor Browser, create a Tor account at Torproject.org. This is where you'll sign up and set a secure password for future logins.
To access the deep web, you'll need to know a few pieces of information. First, you'll need the login details for a hidden service. When you login, the page will contain a small link on the left side of the browser window. Click this to open the Tor Browser preferences menu, then click Settings. Scroll down to Browser and click on Hidden Service. On the hidden service settings screen, enter the email address, username, and password you chose when creating the hidden service. After entering these details, click the green button to create the hidden service.
If you want to access the deep web, you'll need a URL for the hidden service. To get a URL for a hidden service, type the domain name for your hidden service into a web browser and click Go. For example, the URL for HiddenServices.torproject.
Is it illegal to go on the dark web in the US?
You've probably heard of the dark web, which is what the internet is for those who have access to it.
This hidden web is accessed by using a special browser, called Tor, and is meant to be used for good but not everyone will tell you that. In fact, as of 2024, according to a report by the FBI, at least two thousand people have been arrested for visiting the dark web.
So, is it illegal to visit the dark web in the US? Well, it depends on where you are. Let's start with the basics. What is the dark web? If you've ever visited a website that has a little lock icon on the bottom right hand side of your screen, you've seen the dark web. These sites are usually hidden deep within the internet and it is extremely difficult to get to them unless you know what you are doing.
To get to these sites, you use a browser called the Tor Browser. This is a browser that blocks any personal information and then routes all of your traffic through multiple different servers all over the world. Once you are on a dark web page, you can browse around as much as you like.
Why is the dark web important? Most of us rely on the internet to help us make money or communicate with people. We shop online, we communicate online, we order food online, and there are a number of other services that we take for granted.
But, while these things may seem 'normal', there is a darker side to the internet. Most of us think that we are protected from cybercriminals when we go online but the truth is, the internet is an open marketplace.
When you're online, you leave your home and go into someone else's. That means that you're exposed to a whole range of people that you would never meet if you were simply using the internet at home. There are lots of online predators and criminals. And many of them target children.
Many of these sites are child-friendly, which means that they are designed to look like regular websites, but if you click on the wrong link you could end up being infected with malware, phishing scams, or even just seeing adult-only content. Who visits the dark web?
