What is an example of the darknet?
What is the dark web browser? You may have seen these terms floating around, and not known how they relate to you. For instance, are you aware that there's such a thing as a dark web browser? How about the Darknet? Is it even legal for you to use these search terms? Read on and find out!
The Dark Web Explained. First, the Wikipedia definition: The Dark Web or Deep Web is a term used for the set of computer networks and services available through the World Wide Web but whose existence is hidden from public view. By accessing the Dark Web, one accesses a resource located deep within a network, a place where the average person may not be able to see, access, or navigate. The Dark Web comprises several related but distinct concepts, depending on which context one refers to it: For instance, in some contexts, Dark Web may refer to parts of the internet which are accessible only through certain search engines, such as Tor and Hideseek. When these distinctions break down, use of darknet terms can become confusing, though not necessarily inappropriate, especially when referring to criminal activities online. In these cases, it may be advisable to simply ask: What do I want to know? to determine the scope of questions asked about the Internet. The Dark Web may be defined more broadly, as the part of the WWW not reachable through standard search engines. But, if there is no distinction made between search-engine accessible sites and those which are intentionally hidden from general search, as with Tor or the Freenet Anonymizer, the distinction between Deep and Dark Web may become blurred. In addition, the Dark Web includes many resources, not simply websites or files. This aspect of the web may lead to the creation of darknet markets, online marketplaces which feature encryption and anonymity of buyers and sellers. Many of these marketplaces require specialized browsers, like the Tor browser. Tor is a browser for the darknet or deep web. It allows people and organizations to browse anonymously online and to exchange information securely.
What crimes are in the deep web?
There are a variety of crimes that are committed via the deep web.
The most common are: Illegal Drug Trafficking - Drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and marijuana, are illegal in most jurisdictions. Many drug dealers go to great lengths to hide their transactions from law enforcement. The deep web allows these criminals to sell their illicit wares without fear of detection by law enforcement or prosecution.
Hacking - The deep web is a haven for hackers and cybercriminals. While many of the people who frequent the deep web are harmless, others are hackers. Deep web criminals may access your computer without you knowing it and steal sensitive information. They can also use your computer to commit cybercrimes such as identity theft, spamming and DDoS attacks.
Child Exploitation - Some of the most egregious crimes against children are committed using the deep web. Child pornography is one of the most common illegal products on the deep web. Cybercriminals who produce child pornography use the deep web to sell and distribute their wares without fear of being caught.
Cyber-theft - One of the most important uses of the deep web is for cyber-theft. Hackers are able to break into computers without leaving any traces that would lead to them. Using the deep web, they can then commit a variety of crimes against their victims.

Is it legal to go on the deep web?
- A beginner's guide
As the name would suggest, the deep web is a dark web sub-sector where information can be found that is illegal to access, either through search engines or in a direct way.
The best known example of such websites is Silk Road, which was shut down by law enforcement in 2023, leading to an increase of interest in the deep web and other sites on the topic. If you are interested in the deep web, we are proud to present our beginners guide. If you are a beginner, we hope you can still find your way through this article.
First, there is no such thing as 'the deep web', 'dark web' or anything else like that. The deep web comprises of web pages with a depth in a particular theme, often political or criminal themes. The internet is made up of billions of different websites, which makes it very difficult to even imagine that there might be such a thing as the dark web. This confusion is further heightened by several misconceptions about the deep web. It is therefore quite possible that you are thinking of the deep web, but actually it is not the case.
If you have visited Silk Road, then you have definitely been on the deep web, as its main point of sale was Silk Road, a website on which buyers and sellers were able to meet and do business. If you have a browser that does not support javascript, then you probably will not be able to access the site. That is the extent of what we call the deep web. Beyond that, everything else is just plain regular online stuff. There is nothing illegal, dangerous, hidden, or forbidden about visiting a political or business related website for instance.
It is perfectly legal to visit these websites because: website owners can choose to make information available only to their registered users. These websites are accessible to everyone. A user simply can't do anything illegal on these websites. The second point is particularly important as otherwise everyone could commit crimes at any time with the help of a browser. In order to put the last point into practice, you are still protected by the laws and regulations of the country in which you are visiting.
However, if you do something illegal while visiting one of these websites, it is important to note that this will have consequences on your own country.
Are the deep web and dark web the same?
This article is part of a series about privacy and security on the Internet.
The entire series is hosted by the Digital Privacy Research Institute.
Darknet. A darknet is a network of networks, where each node (node meaning a web page, file or service) is hidden behind an encryption protocol that encrypts all traffic. To access a node, you need to be authorized and have the correct credentials, which are either pre-arranged in advance or are given when you first log in. The result is that the network is much more secure and private than a regular web.
The most well-known darknet is the Tor network, which consists of a series of nodes spread across the globe. It's known for its anonymity and privacy features, although it has recently been targeted by governments. Other well-known darknets include I2P, eDonkey, Freenet, Sheepster, Hydra, and Hidden Wiki.
The Internet is a network of networks. It consists of many small networks known as hosts or nodes, which are the basic building blocks. The hosts are divided into different categories, such as servers, clients, gateways and bridges.
I2P is a software application that makes it possible to browse the Internet using the TOR protocol, even though the traffic is going through a node. I2P is used by many darknet sites and is a popular anonymization tool. It's used to share files, visit websites, play online games and participate in forums.
Tor is a software program that enables anonymous Internet traffic, created in 1997. It is based on a technique called onion routing, which distributes traffic across several nodes in order to obfuscate the source of the traffic. Tor is intended to help people who want to get around censors, surveillance or other impediments that might be placed on their communications.
Tor is frequently used to visit websites or to browse the deep web. A darknet uses a Tor-like system, but it's not quite as well-developed as the Tor network. The best known darknet is the Silk Road, a massive black market that sells everything from illegal drugs to stolen credit cards.
Dark web. The dark web is the part of the Internet that is accessed through a special browser.
Is the dark web 90% of the Internet?
The dark web is a scary place.
In most cases, it's a place where you can find drugs, weapons, stolen credit cards and even illegal porn, but there's another big secret.
The dark web is 90% of the internet. Yes, I said 90%. The top 10% of the dark web is where we have some of the largest criminal enterprises. But the vast majority of activity in the dark web is not organized crime.
Most of what happens on the dark web has nothing to do with human trafficking, counterfeiting or drug distribution. In fact, less than 10% of the total volume of traffic on the dark web is for drugs.
So what does the other 90% of the dark web consist of? Well, it's basically a massive network of websites and services that are all in disguise. You see, there are literally thousands of websites on the dark web that are all owned by one company. They don't tell anyone that they exist and they don't tell anyone who owns them. And they have a business model that makes their profit solely from advertising.
If you go to a site like Google.com, Yahoo.com or Facebook.com you'll see that they have an ad blocker button. If you click on it, you get a message that says, This site would like to install an add-on.
If you click on it, they'll install an add-on that puts a little icon on the top of your browser window. Then, whenever you go to any website, the first thing you see is an advertisement.
That's a huge problem for all the sites. Because what if you decide to visit the dark web? It's very possible that you'll see an advertisement before you get to the real page you wanted.
How do they make money? The ad network has a secret weapon. They actually make money by selling your information. If you ever see an advertisement for a hotel or a restaurant on the dark web, the ad might tell you that you should visit their website for more information.
It's kind of a trick because the dark website owners want you to visit their website.
