What does it mean to be creative?

If you ask most people, they will tell you that they are creative.

However, if you actually look closely at what they say, you will find that their definition of being creative is that they are good at what they do and do not do things that are not in their comfort zone. What does this mean? It means that in order for us to be creative, we have to go beyond what is comfortable. In order for us to be creative, we have to go beyond what we know.

For example, if you want to be creative in your professional life, you have to learn new skills. This is going to challenge you in a way that going to school has never challenged you before. You need to stretch and step out of your comfort zone.

If you are a parent, you might be thinking I am already stretching myself out of my comfort zone by taking care of a child. The truth is that you cannot step out of your comfort zone if you don't even know what that is. For example, if you are feeling bored, frustrated, and overwhelmed with your baby, then that is your comfort zone. But when you stretch yourself out of that, you will find that there is so much more that you are capable of doing.

You will discover that you have so many things that you can do that will make you feel so much more satisfied and content. The bottom line is that in order for us to be creative, we have to go beyond what is comfortable. In order for us to be creative, we have to step outside our comfort zone. In order for us to be creative, we need to be willing to learn new skills and stretch ourselves.

When I was about twelve years old, I bought my first car. I remember that it was a red Corolla, and it didn't even come with wheels. I remember that it had a bench seat and three doors. I also remember that it was the last model Corolla to be built. But the point is that I remember.

Fast forward a few years. My father had a small business that sold auto parts. I remember him being able to sell anything and everything. He was so creative in how he approached his work. He was constantly looking for ways to try to make his business more successful. And his customers loved him for it.

During that time, I was always learning new skills.

What are the 4 types of creativity?

In his book Creativity The All-purpose Resource, Richard Saul Wurman says that creativity is the tool of our age.

We face so many challenges in a hyperconnected world: A tsunami of information is flooding our brains with overload; we spend more time consuming and procrastinating than producing or inventing. We work at a pace never seen before and are often burned out, tired or stressed out. These factors make creativity harder to generate.

As the creator of the first business school course in creativity (my students have called it the creativity certification), I am often asked about what types of people can create more effectively. This is an ongoing question for me. As the world becomes more and more diverse and complex, will the ways we understand and define creativity remain the same?

For me, creativity exists on a continuum - we start with the idea of doing something really differently. And at the other end of the spectrum is doing things exactly the same, which is not creative at all. Along the way, we move to the idea of breaking away from what we've been doing and doing something new. That's when we start getting exciting - and I believe that those kinds of ideas are more challenging than just coming up with a new way to make or sell something or come up with an idea that might go viral.

But in between, where do we begin? How do we define the type of creativity we're talking about? There are four main levels or types of creativity I've noticed: Borrowed. Coined. Inspired. Effortless. The word inspiration is defined as the originating force of something. Inspiration can be very empowering and moving - it's often called the fuel that drives us forward. But it doesn't have to. The point is that we're looking at ways to produce more creativity and that means being able to think up and come up with ideas that no one has ever thought of before. At this level of creativity, we can come up with creative solutions and then figure out how to turn them into business models and business opportunities.

At the first level, you borrow another business model or idea, and you want to bring it home.

As well as helping to develop businesses, creativity can help people to better fulfil themselves as people, and live happy lives.

So if creativity is so important, what makes someone creative? Creative people usually have what is known as 'differentness' - a quality that many people lack and need to learn about. Creative people possess two key qualities which make them different: open-mindedness and a deep sense of self.

People who have these qualities often make the best bosses or team members. Open-mindedness. In order to be creative, it is essential to be open-minded. Being open-minded means being willing to consider and understand all types of ideas, no matter how different they might seem. This is particularly important if you have certain beliefs or ways of doing things that you feel are true and good for you. Open-mindedness is vital because you need to be able to take on board other people's views and experiences in order to reach your own conclusions.

Open-minded people are curious, broad minded and have the ability to question their beliefs. Because they are not set in their ways or dogmatic, they can be persuaded to change their way of thinking and behaving.

Open-mindedness is often seen in creative people who are willing to listen to other people's views and ideas, in addition to their own. For example, creative managers are often open to other people's advice, even when they believe that it is wrong, because they recognise that others have different ways of thinking and behaving. They realise that the best way to make their own decisions is to gather together lots of information, which can help them make good choices and solve problems.

When they are around other people, open-minded people ask questions that get at the heart of an issue, and explore its causes. They are also usually good listeners.
