Is Amazon Prime video family-friendly?

By KELLY KILWORTH, May 13, 2023. As a mom, I'm still a bit skeptical of any new streaming service that says it's family-friendly. I haven't watched many family movies on Netflix or Hulu, and even when I do there is always some questionable content, like the Tiny Dancer trailer, the recent The Kid, or The Nut Job.

But after watching the first season of Homecoming, Amazon's newest original series, I can say without reservation that this is a new streaming service that is family-friendly and worth checking out. In fact, I think it's as family-friendly as any streaming service currently on the market.

Homecoming features a diverse cast with strong female leads, who are also mothers. There are also two fathers in the cast, played by Danny Huston and Peter Stormare. The male leads are all actors who have been around for quite a while both in television and film. But there's a young couple at the center of this new streaming series, written by Gina Fattore, who has worked on some of the most successful shows on television, including Saturday Night Live.

Although the show centers on a love story, there are some mature themes. In the first season, viewers will see the characters deal with pregnancy, adoption, infertility, divorce, loss of a job, and a lot more. And it's done well.

But, it's not a show that requires a mature viewer to understand themes. It's easy to follow, and it's a show that's really funny.

What new releases are playing on Amazon Prime?

I was checking out a new set of releases last night, and I noticed something curious.

When I was trying to use the Prime service in a way that seemed reasonable to me, and then checked out Amazon for the same content and realized that the prices were often more than an order of magnitude higher than what I got with Prime.

I also noticed that they were offering some really odd and hard-to-find content (see, eg, here). So, how do they make that money? And why can't I buy everything for, say, 99c from Amazon Prime? It seems like the same items should cost about the same, especially for the movies. If you don't have Amazon Prime, the best way to figure this out is to sign up and log on to their site every couple of days to see whether they are offering your top five most recent purchases in your account as a Prime Exclusives category. The same goes for Netflix. If your top five purchases aren't available through the streaming service, you should realize that you're missing out on stuff - perhaps hundreds of dollars' worth of content - unless you pay an extra couple of bucks each month for a Netflix subscription.

In the old days, when we needed content - either as customers or as producers - we had to deal with this issue. It was usually fairly straightforward. In most of these cases the dealmaker would pay all of the studio's costs, keep 20-30% of the grosses and take a large cut of all residuals.
