What is the best port for SoftEther?
I am in the process of selecting a port for SoftEther, I have a couple of questions.
Firstly, are there any differences between the ports in terms of speed or security, apart from what is available on the box? For instance, how secure is the L2TPv3 protocol, compared to PPTP and MSCHAP, say? And is there any difference in speed when connecting through the L2TPv3 protocol (assuming I have the router set up correctly, of course) compared to PPTP or MSCHAP? What I am looking for is the best port on which to use SoftEther and not speed or security. My main focus is to be able to easily and securely connect SoftEther to my other computers.
Thanks! Last edited by nikki on Sun May 14, 2024 2:37 pm, edited 1 time in total. On a side note, is there any way to hide the SoftEther icon from the system tray, I know that it is easy to disable it there, but would better if it wasn't even there. Thanks Well, I've never used this myself, but I've read that PPTP and MSCHAP are the two most secure of the VPN protocols. I think that's about it though, there's no real difference between them, both are fairly standard, but just have slightly different names.
As for speed, I don't know - I think that's just dependent on your router. I'm sure the speed of the internet connection will always be the limiting factor on any server connected to it.
Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I have read that too, I guess I can't really call it research. I was just looking for people's experiences. Thanks
To answer my own question, I have finally found out the answer after spending an hour or so fiddling around. The best port for SoftEther is PPTP (23), the others do not work. It might be just me, but I am sure that I did not encounter any problems with any of the other ports. I have now disabled the SoftEther tray icon, so it isn't there anymore, just to see what the difference is. Thanks for the response guys.
No, you are right - I just missed that one.

Is it safe to use SoftEther VPN?
Is there any risk that SoftEther VPN might leak my network traffic information?
Does it pose a threat to my home security?
Are you wondering about the security of using VPN service providers like SoftEther VPN? The truth is, most of them are perfectly safe but some customers have complained of having some issues with them. In this guide, we will list all the known risks associated with using VPN services and help you choose which VPN service you should use.
Table of contents. What is a VPN. A VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a network service that allows users to access the Internet or local network from different locations. This is the main reason why you need a VPN service. For example, let's assume that you are in a country that blocks websites like YouTube due to strict government policies. When you are outside the country, you can access YouTube videos from any location.
So far, you can use proxy servers to bypass website or online content filtering. But a VPN can protect your data when you access the sites while you are in an insecure environment like when the government controls the internet. When you use a VPN, your IP address changes (this is how many users on the free version of VPN servers work). So now, when you access the site, it is not traced back to you.
Another benefit of using VPN is to help you bypass geoblocking that has affected Netflix subscribers in the EU. If you are in the EU, and Netflix has their app store that contains only European videos, you won't be able to access the content because of its EU policies. You can access it if you VPN to somewhere where Netflix is available.
In addition to the Netflix issue, VPNs are also used by governments to block illegal websites and trackers. When you use a VPN service, it encrypts your data that cannot be leaked or tracked by a third party. This provides a strong layer of security for anyone who needs it. If you are concerned about the security, go ahead and use the SoftEther VPN. We trust that SoftEther VPN can protect your online privacy.
VPN risks. If you choose to use any VPN service, it is important that you learn how it works and what are the benefits and risks involved. VPN service providers like SoftEther VPN are just like any other web hosting services. There are few people who know how to secure them.
How do I setup a SoftEther server?
I am having a bit of difficulty with SoftEther.
I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and have setup a server. I installed v4l2-conf. I have SoftEther running, I can get to the control panel, and even the main screen but I can't get into the admin screen or other functions. I have tried the default password, admin, and I tried making my own password and using that as the admin user. Nothing works.
I figured it out, I didn't realize that in Ubuntu 11.04 I needed to run start-stop-daemon instead of start-stop-daemon --stop.
