Why does Netflix not work on Apple TV?
Netflix's official website and mobile apps offer up a few answers, but they're a bit confusing.
When you search for a show, you'll notice that Netflix doesn't list any of the episodes on Apple TV. This is because Apple TV isn't officially supported. The reason for this is a little complex, but it has something to do with Apple TV using an outdated version of OpenConnect software.
For starters, there's no official Netflix app for Apple TV. Instead, you're just left with a Netflix site that doesn't work quite as well. The site offers up some helpful details like this:
Not all devices and TVs are supported for Netflix streaming. To make sure you can use Netflix on your Apple TV, we suggest trying out your device or TV on the mobile web version of the site. If you have any problems, visit the support site for more information.
However, this statement is a bit misleading, because you won't be able to use Netflix on the mobile version of the site. The site will work fine on your computer, laptop or smartphone.
Instead, you'll be stuck with the official Netflix mobile app, which was released in 2024 and works just fine. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be compatible with Apple TV, either.
So, what's the catch? The Apple TV uses an old version of OpenConnect, which is used by all Netflix devices. OpenConnect is used to establish a secure connection between the device and Netflix's servers.
When Netflix introduced the Apple TV, it didn't update OpenConnect, so it's now missing a few important features. This means that when you try to log into your Netflix account on your Apple TV, it won't work.
The good news is that the OpenConnect problem is expected to be fixed by the end of 2024. Unfortunately, Apple has yet to provide any additional details about when it will release OpenConnect 4. It's possible that it could be delayed until 2024, or that Apple could release its own version of OpenConnect, which would work with Apple TV.
Until then, it seems like Apple TV owners are stuck using the mobile version of Netflix. But you shouldn't have any trouble using the app on your iPad or iPhone, as it's compatible with all Apple TV models.
The Apple TV works great for watching TV shows and movies from the iTunes store.
