What are the cons of being a substitute teacher?

I just started my first year of teaching (as a sub) and I've been told the same thing over and over again. "You're a great teacher, but you're not a teacher". What are some of the cons that I need to be aware of? I am an advanced student (in high school) and I am really excited about teaching.

Replies to This Discussion. One of the biggest cons of being a substitute is the lack of benefits. You aren't getting paid or even a free uniform. You can get sick or hurt at any time and your substitute gets paid.

There is a lot of pressure on teachers to come to school on time and be ready to go. As a sub, you have no set schedule and it's all up to you. Sometimes you have to stay late at school to get someone's class done.

I've had a few days where I didn't get a call and was working at school for an entire day. I would have preferred having a day off, but I understand that they can't control the call times.

When I started teaching, I thought I would miss having weekends off. But I have since learned that a lot of my substitutes had a "weekend" as well. It's a week long commitment.

Another con is the constant changing of your teaching position. I've been a substitute for a year and I haven't had a single permanent position yet. So I haven't seen how the different departments are like when I'm actually in their classes.

Then there is the constant turnover in the department. I've had several subs that I liked and enjoyed working with. They would leave and new subs would be hired. And I would lose that person.

Overall, I think that the cons are what make it all worthwhile. I am glad that I've gotten to see the other side of the classroom. I've seen what an amazing job some of these substitute teachers do. And I'm sure glad I don't have to be a permanent teacher!

I have been a sub and I LOVE it. Not only do you get to see what your students love and hate about the class, but you get to know your students and their personalities.

This year, I had a girl who used to run around the halls and call out to me because she knew I taught her class.

Is being a substitute teacher stressful?

Yes.

It's a job that requires a lot of patience, perseverance and knowledge. However, being a substitute teacher is an extremely rewarding career that allows teachers to make a real difference in the lives of students.

In this article we'll explore what it's like to be a substitute teacher, how to find a job as a substitute teacher, and what is required to become a licensed substitute teacher. We'll also take a look at the most popular careers to choose from as a substitute teacher, and how much a substitute teacher earns in the U.S.

What Is A Substitute Teacher? A substitute teacher is a teacher who temporarily assumes the position of an absent teacher. He/she fills in for an absent teacher, and may teach classes as well as grade papers and tests. The reason for the title substitute is that the temporary teacher is a substitute for the absent teacher.

Substitute teachers are certified by the state in which they work, and are required to meet specific education and experience requirements to be hired. Substitute teachers must meet at least one year of postsecondary or graduate coursework, usually in education or English, and be certified by the state in which they work.

Substitute teachers work in different schools at various times, and may be assigned to different grades, or even a single class. They are often referred to as fill-ins, but are not paid the same as the full-time teacher who is absent., and their pay varies from school to school. Some substitute teachers work for only one day, others may work for several weeks or months.

What Are The Different Types Of Substitute Teachers? There are two types of substitute teachers: A temporary substitute teacher. A full-time substitute teacher.

Temporary substitute teachers are hired on a temporary basis, and they are required to sign a contract stating the length of their assignment. They are typically assigned to a single school at a time, and can be replaced if the regular teacher returns to work.

Full-time substitute teachers are hired on a full-time basis, and are required to sign a contract stating the length of their assignment.

I have this new job now.

When I started, there were a handful of substitutes. I had a little trouble at first because all of the subs just wanted to help without ever paying attention. They never showed up right on time or right on cue. However, the bosses are very good. They show me how to run the show. There are some kids there who want to learn how to work but they aren't motivated enough to show up. Some of them will leave to do other jobs.

But the ones who want to learn how to run the show get all trained in before the show. Here's my situation, which is complicated by needing to cover holidays, but not in my department (which was a whole different story, because the manager would not let anyone else even touch it), and since that happened, we had 2 day shifts with only 1 person in one of them, which wasn't right for me. So it was my manager letting me go to a different job that would be right for me, with that having been the first time anyone from that particular team saw me do my thing. I got all the "teacher talks to me" from them, and I really didn't appreciate the attitude of one of the managers I worked for when she heard I took my job. There is a whole nother group out there that I could try, and I will, but I want to save what I have built up and start over if need be. So I'm starting small with a bunch of guys I met and worked for in a store, where they actually pay their subs well enough to work and show up to work. They have a team leader, but there is another manager out there that they'll have to wait to see if he takes the job, as it wouldn't be for me (he's already working another job). This particular job came as a surprise as I thought it would be higher, but the owner said the boss told him my rate wasn't high enough. I can use their system, but I have to give up my cell phone until they give me a new number.
