What is the history of employment and the future of Kelly Services?

What is Kelly Services? To put things into context, I think it's important to first understand how we got here. The Kelly/Hoffman family started Kelly, and Kelly Service was their original business. The history has changed a bit since then, as our parent company, Hoffman Services Group (HSG), became Kelly Services Group and it incorporated most of what were the core competencies of Kelly. However, that was over 40 years ago and what follows are just things we've learned in our roles at Kelly over the years.

Employment history. Back in 1965, we were founded as a small temporary staffing agency that handled mainly federal government positions in areas like transportation, science, technology, and health care. These jobs were usually available for up to nine months at a time and the average employee stayed for less than 90 days.

We've since grown to about 2,000 employees and today, we offer a comprehensive menu of services to our clients which include hiring individuals and helping them manage those who work for them. We also do recruiting, candidate sourcing, employment processing, career site management, and many other valuable services for our clients.

The CEO team we lead today have played a pivotal role in developing the firm's operations and products to be more responsive to both our clients and candidates. I served as CEO for 15 years prior to 2026, and I served as the interim CEO during 2026, making this my seventh stint as CEO of Kelly. It's always important to note the distinction between serving as CEO and the day-to-day role of executing as a leader. For me and many in our leadership team, serving as the CEO meant being on call 24/7, working late hours, and not spending enough time with our families which obviously is not the life that everyone has chosen for themselves. Even if you don't have kids, that doesn't mean you don't have a family!

Kelly has been a successful company, and this success is all the result of our hard work we didn't get there by luck or by taking advantage of some good timing. Kelly's founder, Robert Kelly, founded the company with his brother, Fred. They started a small employment services company called Kelly Services, Inc.

Kelly's role is to review the applications submitted by recruitment agencies and to select the agency with which Kelly will work for the duration of the contract. After each selection is made, Kelly informs the recruitment agency of the results and the agency takes the next steps to recruit the applicant.

Recruitment agencies are often able to match their skills to the requirements of the job and can make use of their skills while developing their reputation through successful placement. The companies Kelly works with have many years of combined experience in finding staff for international companies, and have a proven track record. Companies can choose the agency with which they will work, and if you decide to search using these agencies it is necessary to contact them first to gain pre-authorisation to apply.
