Is it possible to stream movies from YouTube or Netflix through Android Auto?

If so, how is it done? Yes. It's possible. As per Android Auto's design specs, the app will only work over your car's Bluetooth or USB interface. As for how you'll do that, Google includes two very specific instructions in the manual.

On your phone, go to the Play Store and search for Google Play Movie Streaming App (the latest version of this is available as .apk file on this page). You'll need to install this Google Play app on your device. Once installed, launch Google Play Movie Streaming App on your mobile device and connect with your car's USB interface, using any audio source as mentioned above. You'll then see a menu like this on your car screen:

This is all that's required to play movies via Android Auto's screen. While playing movies this way works, the quality may not be great. The main problem is your sound device, since it needs to handle playing any music in parallel with videos. To help users who've run into this, Google included two options:

The streaming option is ideal for listening to songs along with movies, but the audio quality isn't good since it's dependent on your phone's speakers. If you have a compatible Bluetooth headset, the video player will try to play the video directly through your phone's Bluetooth interface instead. This should provide better quality than playing directly from the USB interface. However, if your phone doesn't support Bluetooth, you'll need to use the USB interface for some of your movie watching.

However, not all vehicles offer the option to play videos through the car's Bluetooth or USB interface. So check your manual, or call Google Customer Support at 1-800-324-2391, to find out if your vehicle allows the streaming feature.

How do I get Netflix in my car?

Here are a few apps that you might want to check out.

Navigation apps. There are many navigation apps available and it's easy to select the one that best meets your needs. Here are some that I have tested on the iPhone: Navman GPS Navigation app - Navman is one of my favorite. It's very straightforward to use and works well. The main benefit is that it offers voice-guided directions. I actually preferred this app over Google Maps because it offered a slightly better voice-guided experience.

Navigation apps do come with some quirks, however. Some of them will stop working once the map gets really busy, which can happen in San Francisco or Los Angeles. Some also seem to have a problem displaying turns at a lower speed, sometimes taking multiple seconds to finish the turn. If you are looking for a simple map app, I recommend Navman.

Google Maps Navigation - Google Maps offers navigation for free, but for an extra fee you can download its in-car solution. It's worth checking out, if you need Google's map service at work or if you simply want to get the most out of your maps app.

With Google Maps in-car, the driver's side is where the primary action is. This is where you press to navigate, the destination, and your current position. There is also a map to help guide you through navigation. You can also share the road with a friend or family member via Bluetooth.

One thing that annoyed me about Google Maps' in-car feature was that it forced you to put all the details into one box, which didn't allow you to keep track of multiple addresses as easily. This can also be annoying if your destination changes several times.

When I'm driving, I tend to go through my address book rather than input it. When I'm done, I either input the address manually, or just leave it blank if I don't need to change it.

Maps by the BBC - Maps by the BBC is a premium navigation app, although it's totally worth paying for. It offers voice-guided navigation and even guides you through traffic conditions.
