How do I watch HD Netflix on Widevine L3?

Hi.

I'm new to the forum so please forgive me for any faux pas.

I am using the Widevine L3 plugin and have successfully watched Netflix HD on my PC. I use Windows 7 Ultimate. However, I also have a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8. The Macbook is connected to the same network as the PC but I have no idea how to set it up or how to watch HD on it. Can you help?

I am a little out of my league, but can you see the answer in this post: If you read that you will find instructions on how to set up the Mac with the Widevine L3 plugin. As far as I can tell you don't need to worry about anything else. Sorry to be a bother again. I just followed the instructions in the linked thread but I get a message that says "This content is not available in your region". Any ideas? And is there a way to watch Netflix HD on a Macbook Pro, or would I need a PC to watch it?

There are three versions of Netflix available on the Mac. One is free, one has a subscription fee, and the third is ad-supported.

The free version is compatible with the L3 plugin, but has limited support. The subscription-fee version includes the full set of features and DRM protections, so it should work fine. The ad-supported version is less supported, and is a bit more limited than the fee version. (Specifically, it does not support DRM.) It is only available for Mac users in Australia and New Zealand, however.

If you are able to use the L3 plugin with the free version of Netflix, you can do so by installing this version from Apple's website: If you are using the subscription-fee version of Netflix, you can install it directly from Netflix by clicking the "Netflix Desktop" link in the Help menu, and following the instructions that appear. It's likely that the L3 plugin is already installed on your Mac.

Is Widevine L3 good?

I know that the Widevine L3 will run on any device without the user even being notified, so I wanted to use it with my app instead of the Widevine L3.

But how well does it work? According to documentation some devices like the Nexus 5 need "full" Widevine support but Android 4.3 says that devices from 4.2 to 4.4 don't require any extra action for L3 support.

Does L3 really just cover the "playback" part of L3 and not the L1, L2 and L7 parts of the spec? I assume that I only have to implement the WidevineL3InitCtx. And will the L2/L7 functions also be triggered? Here's an excerpt from the Widevine SDK: L3 is now mandatory to play protected content on Android 4.3 and earlier versions, and is a requirement to play unprotected content on Android 4.4 and later.
