While coding itself is not a testing skill, programmers need to be comfortable with testing in order to do their jobs. You may not know how to code, but don't be deterred. I think that these two steps are crucial to become a QA because if you don't know what QA is, you will probably just go by the job description. You can be a QA engineer, QA manager, QA specialist, QA lead, or whatever label you get from your employer but you must know what QA is and know the definition. You can have all the tools, be as well educated as you want and have a degree from a top university but if you don't know what QA means, none of it matters.
