How to get into QA testing with no experience?

How can I become a manual tester?

I am an undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science. However, I really want to work as a manual tester. How can I become a manual tester? I need your help. If you know anything about this matter, please help me.

I want to become a Manual Tester to find bugs that programmers cannot find or cannot think of. It's the most exciting work I've ever experienced! Manual testers usually start with low-level software testing, so if you already have experience with low-level software testing, you might want to look into it. There are lots of places that will pay you to test software.

Your options are: Freelance - the fastest way to get started. Contract/consultancy - pay less than you would for a full time job. Full time - you can work as a manual tester in one of the big companies. Test recruitment agency - similar to freelancing, but usually pay less. University / college - You can try to be a manual tester as part of a degree or course. Be a student - The best way to get started is to join a university course and do your own work. Hi! I'm from Argentina, my country. I really need to find a work to be a manual tester. I'm going to study Computer Science at the University of La Plata. But I don't know how to start. Can somebody give me a guide? Please!

What is Manual Testing? The title "manual tester" is just a marketing name, because there is no manual testing. Manual Testing is the ability to identify the software faults without using any tool. Manual Testing is not a new concept, and it has been used since the 80's.

Software testing is about finding bugs in software. However, a manual tester finds the bugs without using any automated testing tools or techniques.

A manual tester may have no formal education in computer science, and the experience is gained through practice and study. Where do I start? It is always good to start with something you already know how to do. This will reduce the learning curve, and you will have less problems to learn new techniques and processes.

How long does it take to become a manual QA tester?

I have worked as a QA tester since 2024.

I have written around 200 test plans, done 3 internal and 2 external testing. As of now, I've developed good skills in test planning, test execution, and test management.

Do you think it takes at least one year or 2-3 years? Is it really difficult to start becoming a manual tester after working for 10 years in an organization? I wouldn't call it difficult. It'll take you less than a year if you're just starting out. You'll find most manual testers on SO are around your age, so I'd say you'd have the edge. But at some point, you'll be working with a manual tester, who has been doing it longer.

If you ask any experienced manual tester, they'll tell you it's a profession where time flies and you can never get enough. From my experience, it took a lot less than one year to become a manual QA Tester. I started when I was 17 and I still haven't seen a better QA Tester than myself.

However, some people might say that is not being a real QA Tester, but is more like a QA Analyst. That may be true but it is a very good and fulfilling job to do. You will never be bored because you are doing something that you are very interested in.

To become a good manual QA Tester, you should start doing: Manual Testing Scenario: Every tester should be able to set up scenarios manually. You'll need to think about what will happen in every scenario and how it will affect the product. You should be able to understand why people build certain features and what impact they will have.

Test Cases (Planning): Every good Manual QA Tester needs to be able to come up with good test cases. This is more than writing scenarios, it is about thinking ahead what the user will do and how it will affect the application. It is also about planning which parts of the system need to be tested before the main release.

How to get into QA testing with no experience?

I've been getting into the field of software development, while still working as a graphic designer for my final two years in college.

I currently have no idea how to work through the process of QA testing (which has the purpose of catching small bugs that may exist in the project) which makes it hard to apply to jobs like I mentioned earlier. Could anyone provide some resources as to where I can start?

This might not be directly answering your question, but you should ask yourself if you want to be a part of an application development team or be a tester. QA lot of projects are still done by the person who created them. This means you get to be one of the last people to try and verify that something does what it should. A lot of software requires the developer of the software to know what they're doing and what the expected behavior of the software is. You may find that with some software the tester knows more about what they are doing than the developer. If the software is well known enough someone else will find bugs in the software and be able to point you in the right direction on how to solve these bugs.

A lot of testers are also product owners, meaning that you get to come up with the test case first and then get approval to put them into testing. Your job is to create test cases with good input data and output data. You will then determine if your changes produce the correct results and whether your bug fix even fixed the bug. These jobs also require you to have intimate knowledge of your product and its features. This means that you have to be passionate about the software and what it does for your clients. Good software testers are great communicators. They use their communication skills and creativity to make what they do easy for non-developers to understand. I cannot stress enough the importance of passion about what you are doing. You have to love your job. If you don't get paid to love your job then don't take the job.

Tester/Developer: When the project is fully tested and you still have bugs you and the developer have to come up with workarounds until the actual fix is made. This means that you and the developer are going to have to look at the whole design of the project and see what you can live with and what can be fixed asap.
