If you're like me, you're a Netflix fan. It's one of the few things I love to watch on my TV. But until recently, I couldn't watch Netflix on my Chromebook. It just wasn't there. Then one day, Google updated the Netflix app on Chrome OS and suddenly, I could watch my favorite show or movies. I was totally surprised and pleased with the update.
I didn't know that the Netflix app could work on a Chromebook because, like me, most people don't know that Chromebooks can run an app that isn't Google Chrome. So, how do you get the Netflix app on your Chromebook? Follow the steps below.

Why can't i find Netflix app on Chromebook?
I can't find the Netflix app on my Chromebook, even though I've turned on the browser.
I tried using the Windows app, which worked fine, but I prefer to use a native app. What's the deal with this? I'm using Chrome OS, and I have a Pixelbook. If you're talking about a Chrome OS device, you can still download the Netflix app from the Google Play store. It's only for devices that run Android or Chrome OS, and it's not available in all countries, and it's not free.
Why can't you watch Netflix on Chrome?
The answer is that the Netflix app on Chrome OS is an "executable" app.
When you download an executable file on your computer, the operating system checks to make sure it's a safe file and warns you if it's malicious or trying to infect your computer with viruses.
But Netflix is different. It's a web browser plug-in, which runs on the user's own computer. Web browsers are trusted by the operating system, so there's no warning when you install it on your own computer.
The only way to be certain your web browser won't install some malicious script on your computer is to use a browser that doesn't install executables by default. Google Chrome has a built-in setting called "Apps from unknown sources," which lets you control what apps you allow to run on your computer from outside of the Google Play store. All you need to do is turn off the option to allow any app to be installed on your PC.
Google calls this functionality a "sandbox," and we now know why. It's a security feature. When the Chrome OS operating system was first released in 2023, it wasn't able to safely trust any app from the web. Even Netflix was considered a "dangerous" app.
Now, Netflix is safe. Google is now letting people freely install executables on their computers as long as they can verify the installation is coming from Google's own play store.
When users first downloaded the Netflix app, they needed to manually install a new extension. Chrome OS could only recognize that the Netflix app was installed through the web, not the play store. This extension didn't automatically install.
The good news for Netflix users is that the company has said it will eventually start rolling out the Netflix app without the need for an extension. Google says that should happen by the end of June.
That's right: The Netflix app is a browser plugin. It uses the built-in JavaScript engine on your computer to download the website and start streaming. And now, it's safe.
