How do I download Chrome Remote Desktop?

What happened to Chrome Remote Desktop?

It's a great free app that lets you connect to your desktop from any browser, including your phone.

But after Google acquired it and released it as part of Chrome OS, it was only available for Chrome OS devices.

Chrome Remote Desktop is a great way to connect to your desktop or Chromebook from a phone, tablet or PC. You can even use it to access files on a Mac or PC.

But the app was only available for Chrome OS devices. Google says it's no longer supporting those devices.

Google recently announced that it will discontinue support for the last remaining Chrome OS devices, the Pixel C and the Chromebook Pixel C. These two devices will no longer receive software updates after March 2, 2025.

That doesn't mean you can't use them any more. You can still use the device and apps as they were before Google's acquisition.

The Pixel C and the Chromebook Pixel C are also included in the list of devices that can't be updated to Chrome OS version 77. That means Google won't be offering any security patches to those devices after March 2, 2025.

You can also use the device for general browsing. If you want to install apps, you can use the new Google Play store that Google has rolled out on its Chrome OS devices. You can also use the Chrome Remote Desktop app for the same purpose.

It's not just a matter of using the Chrome Remote Desktop app. The Chrome Remote Desktop service itself will be discontinued on March 2, 2025. Google will stop collecting the data that users send through the service.

There is a good reason why Google is stopping support for these devices. They don't have the resources to support such devices.

The Pixel C and the Chromebook Pixel C were launched in late 2025.

How do I install Chrome on my desktop?

Is it the same as on my laptop?

I don't want to confuse anyone and make a huge mess
Google's Chrome web browser is installed the same way in both Desktop and laptop. After you install, use your account and sign in (it just does it for you automatically) and access the dashboard at chrome://accounts. You will see all of your sync info and other info there.

It looks to me that it might be possible, with some minor tweaking of the installer. However I don't know if you are going to be forced to download a bunch of files, if the installation is "hidden" (or as @Taco said in his reply, you're just going to be presented with the option of adding another sync tab with your other Chrome web browser).

Is there any other method of syncing with Google other than what Taco mentioned (Chrome web browser)? It would be great if one could access these settings without downloading anything extra. There is an easier way that I was using until I updated to the OS v27 update. You can still use the 'old' method but will need to do some work to set up the sync. Go to Control Panel then Apps and sort alphabetically. Find Chrome there and drag to desktop or just install normally. This will create a icon that is easy to remove when it is not needed anymore (you will have some space saved by this). Just make sure that you use the right icon size as when I tried to change the size it looked messed up when installed.

In Windows you should also go to My Computer > right click on Chrome > properties. The icon will now tell you more about it. This will start a download to install a small Chrome app called 'Sync' that is basically just like Chrome. Click on install and it will take some time to download the rest of the program so if you are connected to the Internet try using a wired connection. It will take you through the process so you won't have any trouble. From here you should be able to launch the sync app by clicking on the new icon on your desktop. It will show you what you sync and you can then either drag an item off the list to sync or drag items from another computer and have them imported.

I'm guessing with all of this, it would be pretty simple to just uninstall the regular Chrome browser and get a custom install.
