Why is The Boys 18+?
What we need to see in a comic book movie is more of the same: More superheroes, more comic book heroes.
We need more movies like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, less superhero movies like Superman Returns or Fantastic Four 2.
I have been collecting comic books since I was six years old. My first memories are of sitting with my dad in the local comics shop. We would buy Batman and his pals, Spider-man, GI Joe and others.
That's why The Boys 18 is not a superhero movie. It's a superhero comic book movie. The film has more in common with the character-driven action and comedy of Marvel's The Avengers than Superman Returns or Fantastic Four 2. The title The Boys refers to the fact that this is set in the 80s.
Based on the long-running comic series by John Byrne and Terry Beatty, The Boys deals with a group of adult, post-adolescent male superheroes. This is a team that is formed to oppose the villainous Superboy-Prime. And the film explores what happens when the team gets superpowers.
The film is actually an ensemble piece as most of the characters (including the villain) go through different phases. In the opening scenes of the film, the leader of the team, the Man of Steel, is trying to deal with how he feels about his powers. In the film's present day, he has become a father and he struggles with how he'll deal with the new responsibilities he faces as a parent.
In addition to the above, there are the young sidekick, who looks like a younger version of Kevin Smith, the muscle of the group, who is a little creepy at times, the hot female sidekick, who is a little slutty, the smart, nerdy black guy, who is very nice, the handsome bad boy sidekick who can't keep his hands off women, and the beautiful blonde who is a little too sexy. There is also a secret society that tries to manipulate the team into working for them. The villains make their debut late in the story.
The script by Richard Kelly is very funny, and the dialogue is often very witty and clever. The characters are very well drawn. The film is also very action-packed.
Should a 14 year old watch The Boys?
You're probably asking yourself, What kind of 14 year old would watch The Boys?
The answer to that question is, A cool one. And let me tell you, you have to be a little bit crazy to appreciate the darkly comic film from the UK. It's the kind of film that requires a great sense of humour to even begin to comprehend, and yet it's a film that you can totally relate to, no matter what age you are. It's a film that you should definitely check out. It's about people that no longer have anywhere else to go, it's about life after death, and it's about the importance of friendship.
This film was released back in 1998, and the main character was played by a 14 year old named Christian Bale. The film is set in the not so distant future, and it's a time when society has collapsed and left people stranded on a city called 'Purgatory'. As the film opens, we see a mother and her young son as they are chased through the streets by a gang of thugs. As the boy looks on in horror, he thinks, What kind of parent are you, leaving me to fend for myself?, but then he realises that he isn't alone. A group of other children appear from behind the gang, and the mother rushes to them and shields them from the oncoming attack. Later, we find out that these children are actually the 'lost souls' of the past, who have been left to wander aimlessly throughout the city. They will not go unnoticed, and over the course of the film, they will be joined by a cast of characters, including a man who has been in a coma for 30 years, a woman who has been kidnapped and is now part of the gang, a man who is blind, a man who has amnesia, a former gang member, and a man who wants to commit suicide. It's an ensemble cast, but there are some big names, too. They include Ian McKellen (who will win an Academy Award for his role), Kevin Spacey, John Hurt, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, David Morrissey, Joely Richardson, and many more.
