What happened to the deep web?
That's the question I want to answer in this series of posts. I have been trying to understand why there are so many webpages hiding behind Tor hidden service websites, where even more complex websites like Silk Road and Mega can be found. There is a small website called the Deep Web Directory which has a complete list of websites that can be found behind hidden service websites. It's almost like a directory of the deep web.
Before we dive into the deep web I would like to point out that there are two different kinds of deep web, the dark web and the deep web. The dark web is actually not the web at all but the world of Tor hidden service websites and their content, it's a very different topic and is the focus of my next post. The term deep web refers to websites and content that are not accessible through the normal browsing protocol (http, https) and are not visible in the web directory or other search engines.
Let's start by taking a look at the most popular web directory available today. The best known deep web directory is the Deep Web Directory (DWD), created in 1999 by David Wells and maintained for many years by his team. In 2023, the DWD became an autonomous entity when a group of researchers came together to maintain it. It is still kept at the Center for Democracy & Technology. There are a few other directories of this kind including the Hidden Wiki, Secret Wiki, Anonymous Wiki and DeepDotWeb.
The DWD is not very useful because it is not a search engine, so it's not easy to find what you are looking for. Even if it was, the results could be inaccurate or not applicable to your search. For example, if you type in a keyword like Porn and get thousands of links back you can't be sure if they are all pornographic.
Let's take a look at a website from the DWD called The Silk Road. Even though the site is not accessible to anyone except through Tor (a virtual private network), you can access it easily through the link in the DWD. This site can be used to access a lot of different things such as purchasing drugs, weapons, malware and much more. There is even an entire section dedicated to child pornography.
Can you accidentally access the dark web?
So it's been awhile since I've posted anything. This is mostly because I've been extremely busy lately. If you want to know what I've been doing or have any other questions you can always ask me on IRC in the #darknet channel on freenode. Thanks!
What is darknet? Darknet is the hidden network, or "dark web," of the Internet. Most commonly, it is used as a term to describe the entire internet that requires you to use software called a browser extension called "TOR." There are many websites on darknet that require TOR, such as Many other browsers and systems will still be able to browse the dark web if the user uses a different browser (such as Firefox), but not all browsers.
When does it operate? Basically, most people call this "the dark web" because it's an entirely different and hidden aspect of the internet that requires specialized software to access, though it is not actually hidden. Some say that it isn't technically "real" internet, but since so many people access it, I'll say it is a part of the internet.
If you want to look at the current data speeds for those using TOR, here is the link. I can't access it. What's wrong? TOR doesn't allow any of the common ISPs like Comcast or Verizon to recognize it as one of their users. So, they might have trouble finding you online if they check your account information from the email you are currently using.
In order to be seen by those who access TOR, you will need to create an account with them, using your own personal email address (one that doesn't use the same address as other things like your Facebook or Twitter accounts). You can do this on their website . They also offer instructions on how to use their software.
How can I get on it? There is actually three ways you can get on darknet. All three methods are through the TOR browser that is already mentioned above, though you should try to find a way that will be easiest for you to access for your needs.
How many levels of deep web are there?
What are they? Are they real or is everything on the deep web fake?
If you could go therebut you can't and you're not supposed to, where would you want to go? Well there are more layers below the surface of the Internet. Below the surface of the world. Some of them you have never even imagined exist, some of them you know exist, but don't believe in. Some of them you have no way of knowing whether they exist or not, yet your consciousness tells you something about them. You are a being who can take action into your hands to learn about the things around you which you have either decided not to learn about or have forgotten that you knew about all along.
What are these layers? Where did they come from? How big are they? How many levels do they have? Does it really matter? What are the most important ones to you? Do you know anything about the deep web? The Darknet. The deep web refers to content which resides behind the hidden network of websites and other online resources where only a handful of people in the world are aware of their existence. It's content that was intentionally designed to be inaccessible by search engines and normal users. This type of content exists in the Tor network, one of the internet's hidden services. It runs over a large network of computers spread across the globe, each offering access to different content.
Tor is a suite of applications and other services which, when combined, work together to offer anonymized Web browsing. The main aim of Tor is to enable access to a wide range of content which otherwise couldn't be accessed without exposing personal details and being tracked by your online activities.
By running an HTTP proxy server behind the Tor network, users in the darknet have a secure way of connecting to the normal Web. They can use Tor to browse the deep web, access untraceable file sharing sites, or host their own custom websites. They can share content with people in other countries anonymously. Accessing content from the Tor network allows us to gain an insight into the content available on the deep web, as we will see below.
What is the Deep Web? You might not have heard of the deep web, but I'm guessing you've at least visited its parent.
