Can I get SOCKS5 for free?
What should be my minimum configuration
Hi Guys,I need to secure a SOCKS5 connection to my VPS on a low budget.
I'm looking for some guidance in how to configure this. I'm currently running a VPS on Digital Ocean with Ubuntu 14.04, OpenSSH and Squid, but only have access through the proxy server, so if the machine gets stolen that'll be it. Anyhow! To connect to the VPS from an app like Whatsapp or Slack. I already have the IP of the VPS, So does my config. I've setup 2 tunnels so I don't need to portforwarding them.
#Squid (squidGuard). A-S-S-5-U-I/C-8-D-R-M-D-4-L-7-E-6-W. R-W-E-R-O-M. I have a couple questions here:1. Which is your IP at your VPS provider? Port 8080 -> 803. How to restrict all connections by IP or hostname? Can you setup a VPS somewhere else and make an SSH tunnel to it? Do you have root access? If so, I'll need SSH key authentication and not password? Do you have a static IP or will the IP change whenever you reboot the VPS? Do you plan to share your VPS IP somewhere when you leave it unattended? If you do that, could you please reply to say what's your static IP.
Hi guysI'm pretty new to this kinda stuff, I've set up all the basics here already and I am able to use the SSH connection, and I'm in (as far as I can see - it shows me connected). I would assume that once I set up the tunnel and it starts showing me connected that means I'm up and running.
I just want to confirm my configuration now, cause I thought my IP had changed.and if it did my IP should be coming from Digital Ocean, not Digital ocean.com/ip right. As it keeps showing me connected - I assume its working.
Also, should I be able to use any port on my SOCKS5 connection ?
Is Shadowsocks better than SOCKS5?
Shadowsocks is a VPN software for Android.
It allows you to use Tor and VPN simultaneously. Both Tor and VPN are used to encrypt data in transit so it's very secure. Shadowsocks however doesn't have much in the way of configurability. But I guess that's why they're called "shadowsocks".
SOCKS5 is an alternative to Tor which encrypts your data in transit, but not in the rest of the way. Unlike Tor, SOCKS5 only encrypts the packet headers. This makes it a lot less secure. But it's free and open source, so there's no excuse for it not to be up to par with Shadowsocks.
This is a quick guide on Shadowsocks vs SOCKS5. Note that Shadowsocks uses OpenVPN and works with OpenVPN and SOCKS5 servers on Windows. I don't know what happens on other operating systems. I tested this with Wireshark and it works as it should.
Both Shadowsocks and SOCKS5 are based on L2TP/IPsec tunneling. You can find out more about this in my earlier article: Tunneling Protocols.
The main difference between the two is that SOCKS5 encrypts data in transit. However, it does not do any sort of encryption at all in the rest of the way, such as headers and IP packets. This means that SOCKS5 is more vulnerable than Shadowsocks to various attacks that make use of IP packet headers.
Also, Shadowsocks has a much better network configuration interface than SOCKS5. With SOCKS5, you have to set up every single option to configure the connection. This means that Shadowsocks is much easier to configure.
To use both Shadowsocks and SOCKS5, you need to set up a tunnel between them. This is done by using the SOCKS5 proxy server on Shadowsocks. There are two ways to do this.
Directly. Piggybacking on the data from Shadowsocks. Directly. To directly use Shadowsocks and SOCKS5 together, you'll need to use two different applications. Here's how it looks when both of them are running on your phone.
