In a recent study of wage distribution in the private sector, we found a relatively narrow distribution of median pay: just 17.2 percent fell above the midpoint in the range of the bottom 10th of earners. And more than half of those at the lowest levels of pay reported that they either hadn't heard of a typical company's wage survey or didn't know whether their salary reflected a typical pay structure.

Wage transparency is particularly rare in small firms where many workers typically are paid in cash or on a weekly basis. It's also less common in many large companies with many salaried employees. However, many companies now recognize the value of making this information public.

We surveyed 7,749 workers on their experiences with wage transparency and found that only 12 percent of respondentsand 2 percent of womenhad a problem receiving wage information that was relevant and complete. Those difficulties arose when employees and managers had different definitions of wage transparency, said the study. For example, respondents defined transparency as providing access to salary reports through a company's website (39 percent) or disclosing information in writing (32 percent). Workers saw fewer problems if they were directly involved in the wage process.
