What is NordLynx?

Nordlynx is the official internet connection of Togoland with access to online libraries, schools, clinics, medical assistance, jobs and more. The internet is a central place for Togolese people. Many use the internet each day for many things, either personal or for work purposes. However, the internet has not yet arrived in every community throughout the sub-region of Togo, and many do not yet have access to a device to connect to the internet at all.

What is this technology named after? When the technology was brought to Togo it was originally given the name, "Nord Lynx". After the first few users from France had used it, and the success of that system, the name was eventually changed to "Nordic Network." In French "Nord" means "north" as well as "north wind." This "wind" aspect was very fitting for what the users of the technology experienced. It connected them to their friends and family in other parts of the world, just like it connected north to south, or wind blows toward the north.

Why are there two technologies? At the time Nordic Network 1.0 (now called Nordlynx) was first tested, there was not enough bandwidth to handle the traffic for all users using an internet connection. This meant that there were too many users, so they needed to split them into different groups. A second technology, Nordic Network 2.0, was developed to allow for larger groups to connect at once. It currently does not use the WAN IP technology, but instead, it uses a Wi-Fi wireless network for connections.

Why did Nordic come here? The original reason that people wanted to put internet access on the border was due to the high cost of the internet connection outside of Porto-Novo, but the cost in Togo was only 30% of the outside prices. Since that time, internet has become extremely affordable here in Togo, while it remains very costly elsewhere. If Internet can be delivered anywhere in Africa, as long as they can send a router, there is a good chance that it can arrive at least into Togo. Nordic provided that service and has since then built up the infrastructure, equipment and capacity necessary to provide internet access across Africa.
