What does a Chromecast with Google TV do?

What's the difference between Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV?

It turns out that there really isn't a huge difference at all!

Chromecast is an HDMI dongle that turns your TV into a media streamer, but we're not entirely sure how good it's at that either. But if you're not really a big fan of fancy technology, that might not be a problem for you.

Google has also recently introduced a new version of its Chromecast dongle called "Google TV" - which includes Google's software interface that hooks it in with apps from Google Play and YouTube, plus Chromecast support. But if you've already bought a Google TV device, Google will refund the difference between Google TV and Chromecast. Not a bad incentive.

Google does offer some benefits to dongle-users as the new boxes don't require a wire connection, so everything works at once one screen without changing anything in your current setup. That may be an issue for older Chromecast dongles which you've already installed in other rooms and/or connected with wires. For the latest generation Google TV boxes, this doesn't apply. But overall we think the new boxes are better value for money - and even if you choose Chromecast instead, you'll still have the benefits of having all your streaming available at once one screen rather than having to change each channel between two different sources, which is why we're giving the winner below to. You guessed it, Google TV.

It turns out that there really isn't a huge difference between the new Google TV and Chromecast. Both are basically a glorified HDMI dongle with slightly different software overlays added to provide some basic functionality.

And just like with most of the other devices we've reviewed, there are a few very good reasons to go with Google TV over Chromecast as an alternative.

There are three different Chromecast devices: Chromecast Audio. Chromecast Ultra. Why is there a Chromecast and a Chromecast Audio? I'm not 100% clear on why they made this distinction but I think it is because they designed these two devices for different types of users. Chromecast is pretty much the same as any other Chromecast (video content sharing) but the Chromecast Audio is primarily a Bluetooth speaker (audio content sharing). So, why two devices? I've only heard stories that the Chromecast Audio does not work as well as the Chromecast, which seems backwards to me. I've also heard some stories that both devices work pretty well. My experience? It really depends on the hardware and software set-up.

In the past I have bought both devices so I'll share my thoughts and experiences on each of these. Update (10/8/2014): As of Oct 2024, I'm now recommending just the Chromecast for almost all of my clients. I've had very good success with that. The Chromecast Audio was designed for the speaker market.

I will keep updating this post as I try new things out and report back on how each device works for me. So, here is my story. Let's start with the basics of each device.99 CAD

Google says it supports up to 4K video streaming at 60FPS. Available here: The main thing I like about this little device is that it is wireless and easy to setup. With a single HDMI cord it will cast wirelessly your content from your mobile phone, laptop or tablet to your TV.

To do this, open a web browser on your mobile device (I recommend Chrome or Safari) and go to the web page for your Chromecast. Select a screen size and enter your WiFi password to connect.
