Does the Magic Link work for CarPlay?
The following discussion was initiated by a guest on our forum. The answers are our own, and do not reflect the opinion of Apple or its partners.
Apple's newest car, the 2023 Cadillac XT5, has a very cool feature called Magic Link that allows you to connect your iPhone to the car with no cables. You don't even need to turn on the CarPlay screen. In our time testing, we found that it worked fine on all AT&T LTE-capable iPhone models. We got about a 30% connection drop rate. So, what should you do if you want to use Magic Link but your car only has an older AT&T 3G model?
Our forum guest has a 2023 BMW 5 Series, which uses BMW's 2G CDMA phone and doesn't support the Magic Link feature. He thinks his iPhone won't be able to pair with his BMW's Bluetooth because of its lack of support for CDMA phones. His concern is that he will have to use the old fashioned way, plugging in a USB cable. The problem is that USB is no longer the standard for connecting iPhones to cars. And, in the case of CarPlay, the only way to connect to CarPlay is through a USB Type-C connector. So, how can he get around this?
In our new video, we discuss the pros and cons of the Magic Link feature and CarPlay. It turns out, you can still use the Magic Link feature even if you have a 2G CDMA phone. But, there are some limitations and you might not want to go down that route. To find out more, read on.
There are two different ways to use the Magic Link feature. You can either use an Audi A4 or an Audi A5, the first two Audi cars to get Magic Link.
We know that a number of BMWs and other high end cars from Audi will have Magic Link installed in the car. But, it looks like only a small percentage of vehicles will get the Magic Link feature. So, we're going to start with the Audi cars.
For the most part, the way the Magic Link feature works is that the car has a built-in Bluetooth connection to the phone and that phone has built-in Bluetooth to the car. The car knows when the phone is in its Bluetooth range and automatically connects to it.
How do I set up Toyota wireless CarPlay?
Follow the in-car setup instructions. Check the device for new messages and calls. Your phone will automatically send updates to your car when you receive new messages or calls. When you are no longer receiving updates from your phone, press the OK button on the CarPlay Controller to exit the in-car setup.
If you have multiple wireless Apple devices on your key fob, and CarPlay is not available in CarPlay mode when you select the car, follow these steps: Select CarPlay Settings from your phone's Home screen. Tap Wireless. If your device isn't listed, you'll need to update your device to iOS 11. If your car has the touch-screen or steering wheel controls, or if it doesn't have a wireless connection to the vehicle, follow these steps: Use the wireless Apple Device app on your phone to install the car adapter as a secondary Bluetooth device. The car adapter will be added to your phone's Bluetooth menu as another available Bluetooth device. Tap Add Bluetooth Device. Your car will turn on the wireless interface.
Note: If you try to connect to the vehicle using the Bluetooth device and you get the message Can't Pair: The Apple iPhone must be paired to this device. On your iPhone, tap the Pair button on your CarPlay controller and follow the directions.
Connect the CarPlay Controller to the vehicle and begin using CarPlay. Connecting the car adapter is required to start using CarPlay. If your car doesn't have a touch screen or steering wheel controls, you'll need to use the wired connection instead of wireless. Wired connectivity will be available when the car manufacturer provides it.
Connect your Apple device wirelessly to your car. If your car doesn't have a built-in wireless interface, follow these steps: Disconnect the phone from the car adapter and connect the phone to your vehicle. You may need to remove the car adapter from your phone's USB port.
Plug the USB cable into the USB port on your phone, and the USB connector on the car adapter, and charge the phone with the adapter's power supply. Reinstall the car adapter on the phone by connecting the car adapter to your phone's USB port, and charging the phone with the adapter's power supply.
