I have seen many a good looking game on Facebook, where the developer/publisher has spent money trying to make it look better and nicer than everyone else.

And the result is always very nice. But then I see it on the App Store and I'm like, "That's what he meant when he said 'game'." Is there any objective way to judge this sort of thing? For example, in terms of visual appeal, you could consider stuff like number of icons and the way they're positioned. How are these icons organized? Do the user's have to tap each one of them? Is the number of taps limited, or does it go on forever until the player quits playing?

One important thing to keep in mind is that a game can have a lot of different styles and yet still be fun. For instance, Tetris and the app called "Tetris" have exactly the same visual style, yet one is a classic timeless game while the other is a simple puzzle game with a lot of fun. The visual style might even not have anything to do with the game at all.

The answer would depend on the kind of game you are writing. If the game is "a little bit" more complicated, like, having to navigate a menu hierarchy or perform a complex task to complete the game, than you should aim at making your game look really polished.

If your game is just a quick casual game like for example a platformer with a handful of levels, then aim at making it look simple and elegant. How do you think about creating and optimizing your game for iPhone and Android? For iPhone I'd say I optimize for quality. A well made game looks fine. What matters for my audience is whether or not the game is fun. So if it's fun, then a perfectly made iOS game would definitely win over a perfectly made Android game. On the other hand, if I feel like a game plays worse on iOS than on Android, then I start to think of how I could improve the Android version so that it plays the same as the iOS one.

For Android I think about quality first. A well made game is fun. What matters for my audience is whether or not the game works as intended. So if the game is enjoyable and works, then a perfectly made Android game would win over a perfectly made iOS game.
