How to setup OpenVPN in Windows?
I'm using Windows 10, and I have tried some tutorials online, but they're usually not working or are too complex for me to understand.
I wanted something simple that I could set up quickly and just forget about. If you know of anything that's easier to use, please comment! Step 1 - Install OpenVPN GUI on Windows 10. Open your browser, go to and download it (remember to rename the file from Openvpn to Openvpn.exe).
Step 2 - Install OpenVPN GUI by double-clicking it. You need to run OpenVPN GUI as Administrator. Run Openvpn GUI, and then click on the Start button. Step 3 - Install OpenVPN on your Windows 10 machine. Right click on the Openvpn.exe file you just downloaded. Then click on Run as Administrator. This should start the installation process.
Then, just follow the installation wizard. If you've used other VPN services before, you'll feel comfortable with this installation procedure.
On the next screen, you can see Install OpenVPN service automatically. If you want to do this, click on Yes.
Once installed, just restart your PC, and you'll be ready to set up your OpenVPN client. Step 4 - Add OpenVPN client config file. The next step is to get the config file, by editing the openvpn.conf file.
If you're using a Mac, you don't need to do this, since there is an option to edit the config file via a GUI. If you're using a Windows machine, you have to manually copy the file from the openvpn.conf folder in the download location to your Windows C:UsersYourName folder.
You'll then find the openvpn.conf file inside that folder.
Edit the openvpn.conf file by adding a line like the following: # Example configuration file for OpenVPN 2.

Can you host an OpenVPN server on Windows?
Windows has come a long way since the days of IIS3 and SMTP on port 25.
At this time Windows 8 still doesn't support SSL and OpenVPN is pretty much the only option if you're going to use SSL. I recently setup an OpenVPN server on my Win8 laptop, it's a pain in the ass. But I finally got it to work, here are my tips and tricks.
Configuring Windows to use OpenVPN. You will need an account with Strongswan as they provide the strongswan-proto-tls and strongswan-proto-auth packages. With Strongswan installed on your server you will be able to generate the necessary keys and certificates and use them for secure connections. Before you can setup OpenVPN though you need to configure some settings on your Win8 system. Here are my recommendations.
Steps. Open the Control Panel and click Network and Internet Connections. Right click on your ethernet connection and select properties. Click the IPv4 tab. On the IPv4 Settings select Automatic (DHCP) and click ok. Next, select Use the following DNS servers and enter the IP address of the DNS server your router is using for Internet access. For example 8.
Next, click Advanced and enable Automatic configuration using DHCP or manually configure each interface. Finally, click OK, close your Control Panel window, open up the command line and type ipconfig to get the IP address of the adapter you just set up. For example 192.168. Next run ipconfig /all to see all adapters that are available on your system.
This will create the necessary virtual adapter which will be used by OpenVPN. The next step is to open up the command line and make sure OpenVPN is installed correctly. If not, the easiest way to install OpenVPN is to download the latest release and unzip it. Unzip it in your C: drive, open up a command prompt window and type "cd c:openvpn". Next type "./setup" and hit enter. This should install OpenVPN and all the necessary files. Next run "./openvpn" and set the required parameters. For example you might set your server address to "10.
