The software is a few years old and many of the features are still missing. So how do I set up an OpenVPN server on a Windows platform?

However, you can download and install it from here if you want to skip ahead to the server setup. If you don't want to install OpenVPN, you can skip this section and continue on to the server setup.

Install OpenVPN. In Windows 7, click Start > All Programs > OpenVPN > Install OpenVPN. A small window pops up and asks you to confirm you want to install the program. If you go ahead and install, it will take care of the rest of the installation. Click Next.

Note: If you get an error saying The specified computer name is not available, it's most likely due to DNS not being set correctly. Your computer may or may not have DNS enabled by default. If you're having trouble connecting with the computer name, check if DNS is enabled.

After the client has done the client configuration (connecting to the openvpn server) I get connection failed. The following worked for me and is based on the OpenVPN GUI configurator (): Open Windows firewall. Configure port forwarding to TCP: 443/TCP - if it's not enabled, enabling it might help. Configure TCP: 5007/TCP to your server. You can start openvpn either with -4 or -c. If you're using -c instead of -4, you'll need to open port 5007 on your server.

And this protocol has the built-in security of a virtual private network (VPN). This means that you can use the Windows RDP protocol to allow remote access to your PC from a remote computer.

But as good as it is, there are some limitations in Windows RDP. For example, Windows RDP is not compatible with Viscosity. You will see the following message when trying to connect:

"This connection cannot be encrypted using a supported VPN protocol". So, if you want to use Windows RDP to connect to your server, you must install and configure OpenVPN on the server. Once configured, the client will connect to your server using the OpenVPN protocol instead of the Windows RDP protocol.

Prerequisites for installing an OpenVPN server on Windows 10. For this tutorial, you need to have an Internet connection and an active Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your Windows 10 PC. We recommend using a commercial VPN service for this purpose.
