What is FortiClient VPN for?
The need for a VPN. Your internet connection is one of the most important connections that you can have in your life. You can connect to any number of websites when you are using a VPN service - even outside of your home country and while you're abroad - with the confidence that your internet traffic is secure, because your web browser sends the actual data over an encrypted tunnel instead of sending the information directly through your internet router or DSL provider's infrastructure.
The internet is also the number one way that hackers access your computer network, which means that you should be taking all necessary steps to secure your connection from unauthorised access and intrusion. VPNs protect your internet connection and keep it secure while you are connected, while making it easy to access content that you want to restrict, in ways that can make them useful for businesses or students as well as a home user. This document answers the questions most commonly asked by FortiGuard Home users, including: Is this a VPN? What does it mean to use a VPN? Why do I need it? Yes, FortiClient provides these services. A FortiClient system is designed to provide these services to its users.
What is a VPN? A virtual private network (VPN) is software that is running on your home computer that helps protect your internet connection from other devices and the internet provider's infrastructure. By using a VPN, you can browse the web more safely, securely and anonymously. The software takes part in encrypting the data you are sending to the web server, making it look like it is coming from a secure location, such as your home.
FortiClient VPN encrypts your internet connection, so that only the sites you visit over the internet will see the true internet address of your device, even if that is the address of a third-party website. You can change the IP address that you appear to be connected to, so that people don't track your internet activity or see your activity at the sites you visit over the internet.
In short, the FortiClient VPN encrypts the data you send to websites before it leaves your home router. This stops your ISP or anyone else being able to see what you are doing online. It also makes it much harder for hackers to find out what you are looking for online.
